Bini
I may be mistaken but I understand that Canada offers maternity leave up to a year. I have friends (here in the US) that had to return to work after only 6 weeks of giving birth. I understand not everyone has the luxury of being a stay-at-home mother but despite how hard the newborn stage is, a 6 week old infant is just too young to be away from his or her mother, in my opinion. It's especially tough if you're breastfeeding.. I know that an additional couple weeks may be granted if the mother underwent a c-section delivery, versus a vaginal delivery. Mahone
In the UK maternity leave is 6 months ordinary, which is on full pay. The employee then has the option of taking an additional six months if they so desire, but I think this latter 6 months is on reduced pay. I think paternity leave is two weeks on full pay. Backroads
My work gives me 6 weeks (I really need to check if it is paid or unpaid). Husband is trying to find a better-paying job, though, because he would prefer me to be a home mommy (which is fine with me). Right now we're both bringing in money, so we feel rich, but I don't think we could make ends meet one just one paycheck. So a job that paid his current income plus half of much? My also pregnant co-worker is planning on bringing her baby to work with her, but she gets to hide out in a back corner while I deal more often with people, so it might not work for me. MarginOfError
If it were up to me, women would get 6 months maternity leave (to get them through the minimum recommended duration of exclusive breastfeeding) with an option for part time work after 3 months; men would get 3 months paternity leave so that there is a good chance the kid will be sleeping through the night when he goes back to work. Such socialist scum am I.

Back in our school days we had a geography teacher that we only saw for a few months at any one time because of this. She had three kids during the time we were there, with a full year off with time. I'm all for employers providing their employees such benefits, and many do.

talisyn
My 6 weeks of maternity leave was classified as short-term disability, which was 60% of pay. Gratuitous thank you to employer who provided paid maternity leave: I was glad that it was enough to keep my insurance going. I then took another 2 weeks which was classified as 'bonding', which was unpaid. I was just glad I already knew about how to breastfeed before going back to work this time around ^^
marshac
If I worked for a company that offered longer maternity leave I'd be loyal forever ^^How about ANY paid maternity/paternity leave? So many companies offer nothing- you can exercise your rights under the family medical leave act, but that's it. Pathetic.
