I apologize if this is too personal, but may I ask where he studied? I have been searching for institutions that teach Vietnamese, but they are very scarce.

Univ of Michigan (Go Blue!). He was also the co-president, treasurer and secretary (at different times) of the Vietnamese Student Assn. Obviously, we are not Vietnamese, so he musta done something right.

Southeast Asian Programs

Be prepared to spend some mega bucks for tuition, unless you are a resident, even then, it ain't cheap. As a public school, it won't give 100% scholarship aid to non-residents (my son got a ton of aid, but not 100%, which he would have gotten at most other schools since he was National Merit, had high SAT scores, etc.). You might want to look around at some of the private schools that have excellent language and area studies programs and where the tuition may be higher, but they can give 100% assistance if needed.

Thank you! I am familiar with their language program and knew that they taught Vietnamese. I was also interested in their music program, but they are absurdly expensive, even though they are an excellent school.

O.o

I studied Latin in private school for several years. My father speaks English and is fluent in 5 other languages, so it was really stressed upon us kids to pickup a secondary language, which happened to be French for all of us. Apart from English and French, I understand Tagalog and I'm getting better at picking up the Spanish spoken around me. Since I've been married to my husband, who is Dutch, I've also learned some Dutch phrases over the years.
