Get Out.

I wanted to love this so badly, and I guess I set myself up by reading all the hyped reviews, but it was too predictable that it fell short ultimately. That said, the cast did a well-rounded job and the plot is smooth enough. Unfortunately, it just dropped too many hints from the get-go that a critiquing mind is easily able to piece everything together long before the ending scene, which is a shame.

I saw The Shack. It's a rather controversial film, but does a great job of depicting the relationship and interaction between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as well as God's love and wooing of wounded souls--especially those who have experienced great tragedy.

The Giver

I read the book years and years ago but do not remember much about it. This was really good though. I enjoyed it very much, from the depictions of the society and how it was run to the social commentary it was making. So often it feels like human emotions are demonized in our culture, so it is nice to see depictions where the good and the bad are necessary and that if we didn't have them, we'd recognize when they were missing. I also liked this better than other "emotionless" dystopic societies I've seen depicted(Equilibrium, Equals) because it felt a bit more real to me the way the people acted and how it was thwarted.

Loved that book. Great description of it. Haven't seen the movie though.

Kong: Skull Island

Entirely mediocre.

I loved it!

I love kaiju movies with leading male and female characters that don't get romantic.  Like Pacific Rim.

PSA:  Wait for the after credits scene.  It places the movie in a Trilogy.

The "Power Rangers" remake.

Let's just say that it's not exactly kid-friendly.

I had thought about going to see that with my kids and then a relative who knew about my concerns in movies at times warned me about characters and things.  We didn't go see it.

It was AWESOME!

Another PSA:  There's an after credit scene that got my kids excited... ties the movie to the TV series - my 24-year-old nephew's Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and my kids' Dino Thunder!  They're now wanting to see what they do with the character in the movie's sequel.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them.  (Spoiler alert?????)

I saw this movie on a flight but even with almost nothing else to do, it was a rambling, plotless mind numbing, pointless waste of time.  I keep thinking there would be some resolution to something that would make sense – but alas there was none – not even a love story and the precursor hints to anything meaningful are all dead ends that beg the question – “really?”

Kids saw Moana.  My teen boys summarized it thusly:

Uhmmm.  ok...

My brother said it was a Pacific Island remake of Pocahontas. He's not wrong.

Tribal princess who refuses to accept the role her father gives her - check

Pseudo villain who has a change of heart and helps said princess - check

Actual villain obsessed with shiny things - check

Princess advised by grandmother figure who has become a part of nature - check

Random animals provide comic relief - check

Musical number sung in a canoe - check

I never saw Pocahontas, so I wouldn't know.  But I did hear the music.  And at least the music in Moana was several orders of magnitude better.

He's wrong.

For a person who collects the Prince dolls instead of the Princess dolls... there's no Prince doll in Moana.

Moana is not my favorite Disney animated show. But it may well be my favorite Disney message of all time.

I killed an eel
I buried its guts
Sprouted a tree, now you got coconuts
What's the lesson
What is the take-away
Don't mess with Maui when he's on the break-away!

heh heh heh Hey!

False. And I think you can make a case that John Smith is no more a prince than Maui.

John Smith married Pocahontas in the Disney version.  So he became a Prince.  Maui didn't marry Moana so he's not a Prince.

I don't recall Pocahontas and Smith getting married.
