WordFlood,

Are you a survivalist, doomsday type of guy, or have you been put in charge of emergency preparedness at church? :D

Great links. I was kind of apathetic (I carry my 2 years supply with me, I'd always say), but then put in charge of EP as a member of the Bishopric and helped set it up in our ward with the EP Coordinator. Really opened my eyes, and made me realize that I'd better get off my duff!

That, and we had a GA come to our stake a couple of years ago quoting Pres Hinckley about the signs of the times and he finished with "You've been warned, brethren". (during a PH Ldrshp meeting). Needless to say, I was a tad alarmed...

Six,

Ya my bishop gave me this calling and I really like it. When I was set apart, well, all I can say it was very very spiritual and very eye opening. I mean if people really knew.... you know?

After I was set apart, I got in my car and drove along the wasatch front for nearly 3 hours getting inspiration. The next few weeks I worked on a 30 page emergency plan for our ward. We just rolled it out to our ward. It was a huge relief for me to get that done and in the hands of the ward members.

In the valley, we have potential issues with earthquakes. But most people perhaps arent really even prepared for something as simple as a long power outage. Apparently they used the my basic plan for every ward in the stake.

Im pretty ready now myself, of course, I have to be. My job is to organize the evacuation of the members if we need one. We have radios, maps, food - everything we need to get people out of the living spaces and over to the stake center if needed. We are going to have a mock drill/earthquake in a few months. That should be fun! We are going to test the radios I purchased and also test the plan.

Anyways - those links are a start, I even had a website up for about a month so the members could see the plan online.

FYI - Our ward is preparing for a "mock" emergency. Therefore, I have re-opened our preparedness website for our branch at the following ...

http://www.ldsready.org

Although we use it from time to time for our ward, you are welcome to use it yourself if you wish. The website will be up and running in a few hours after the URL propigates through the web.

I can't get to it. Maybe need to wait a little bit longer.

It will be up later today, My ISP is inspecting the site. They have to do that sort of thing to make sure we are living up to the rules of the ISP, which is no problem for me!

Ok, I got a temp URL from the ISP ...

http://ldsready.org.p10.hostingprod.com/

There you go ... Enjoy ...

The real one ... http://www.ldsready.org should be ready by this evening or tomorrow.

Nice little site, lots of good information on there.

One little quip though.

The music on the homepage. I usually listen to music or online radio streams on my computer, and the music drowns that out. I see there is a volume control at the bottom of the page, but you have to scroll down to see it, even on my 22'' monitor. It would be nicer to have that volume control visible at the top of the page, so someone could cut it off if they wanted to.

Do you have anything on "codes" over the PA such as "Code Red," "Code Pink" "Code blue" etc.? Thank you

We currently aren't using a Public Address system to announce the codes. However, it certain wards a PA or public adress system (ie Bull Horn) wouldnt be a bad idea. In Utah, many wards are now in apartment complexes or condo complexes, so it would be very efficient to have a PA.

The main purpose of the codes (as suggested in the Action Plans section), is to clarify what we are doing so rumors about what we are supposed to do are held to a minumum. Right now we are using three methods to communicate the action plans or codes...

1) Home teachers

2) Emergency Coordinator via FRS Radio

3) Door to Door with Emergency Scout Teams

The problem with our ward is the home teachers. We are very transient, so we have a back up with the FRS radios and the door to door

Also all members have already gone to a Fireside where the action plans have been presented and a presentation CD was also given to them about what the actions plans are. The website at LDSReady.org was to help with new members coming in and out of the ward.

The action plan sections has all the codes we use ... http://www.ldsready.org/ActionPlan.html

I hope that answered your question

No problem at all T.

One of the things I'll be working on is the three month supply section. Im hoping to have that up and running in a few days. It seems the church is really pushing the food supply in three tiers.

1) 72 hours. Emergency meds, water and food. Long storage like MRE, Granola bars or canned food.

2) Three months. Food you normally eat but three months supply of it. Obviously, if you eat a lot of salad, you may have to change your taste as salad has a shelf life of about 4 days.

3) One Year. Long term, large qty food items like Wheat and other grains and large qty of water.

The section that Im working on will have to do with possible diet changes that will need to be made in order to accomidate a good rotation schedule for the 3 month storage items.

I actually have been changing my diet for the past 4 months to experiment with the 3 month storage plan and found the following items below have a great storage length, and arent too far in terms of what I was eating before.

Canned Meat: This is a real problem for many members. We are so used to buying fresh hamburger or steak and frozen chicken breasts that none of that will work without refrigeration.

I have replaced those with the following.

1) Canned Beef/ Corned Beef (ie Hormel Corned Beef)

2) Canned Ham (ie DAK canned ham)

3) Canned Tuna fish (any brand you like)

4) canned Chicken (expensive, so you'll have to think on that)

I never thought I would consider Corned beef, but I found out it makes a great chili, and also works with many mexican dishes. Canned ham is great on sandwiches or caseroles or even for breakfast. Tuna, of course in caseroles or sandwiches. same with chicken.

The thing on these items is that you'll want the smallest can available that would feed you/your family for one meal. If you open a can, there wont be a way to refrigerate it afterwords and thats a waste!

Just some ideas I thought I would through out there.

what about SPAM?!?!

I love SPAM... lol..

joking aside..

The three month kit is something that I have been working on, taking it in stages.

I have the apartment 72 hour kit, and the car emergency / 72hour kit.

I'm not so sure about doing the year's supply stage. I really don't think I have space in my little apartment for all of that.

I'm also not really a fan of canned food in 72hr kits, mainly because of weight, that you could use for more water.

Well, Spam is an option, just not for me! The three month thing you have to eat it, and thats not one of my choices.

For 72 hour kits, Ya, I have granola bars, water that sort of thing. Some canned soup, but just quick and easy stuff.

You know, they say you're supposed to store food you normally eat...right?

So I'm thinking for my 3 month supply:

23 12-pack cases of sprite (3 per day)

23 12-pack cases of the little dasani bottles (3 per day)

8 24-pack cases of ramen noodles (2 per day)

90 cans of cheap wal-mart brand chicken and noodle soup (1 per day)

That would be about what I eat....

(2 more year of college left, and I'm never eating ramen again)

We tried MRE meals two Sundays ago for dinner. They cost about $2.50 each entree. There are lots of extras for side dishes. They tasted very good and have a ten year shelf life if kept at 70 degrees. I had a Jambalaya meal and wife had beef enchilada.

Ben,

I think MREs are especially great for the 72 hour kit. BePapared.com has some good stuff for sure. I try to link as many of those emergency supply places as I can.

Those are also good because you dont need to wash any dishes! That saves a lot of water. Just remember to get disposable forks and spoons and eat those right out of the pouch.

$2.50 for one MRE main entree meal??

How much are they charging for a whole MRE?

geez...I could have made millions while i was in the army, I could get cases of them for free if I wanted...geez..

Just remember to get disposable forks and spoons and eat those right out of the pouch.

do these places also sell the long brown plastic spoons that come with whole MRE pouches?, regular plastic spoons won't reach to the bottom of the long pouch the main meal comes in. Of course the easiest way to eat them is to use a knife and cut it longwise, not where the notches are on the top of the pack.

Ive never seen the MRE entrees that come with spoons. Only the full meals. Umm, just a warning to non-military guys, they are LOADED with calories - So, entrees will be good, unless you want to gain 20lbs in a disaster! LOL

Those links are wonderful. I also believe firmly in being prepared. As a family we have often had to use our food storage as my husband's job is not always 'stable'.

I too have part of my website dedicated to Preparedness and maybe some of you will find helpful info on there:

Family Preparation Section

Bev

Bevs Country Cottage

The Testaments Fireside

I have bookmarked this website. Looks like some good info and links. Thanks for sharing that with us. :)
