As can too much sun, too much food, too much water... Etc.

The key bit, there is "too much".

(The same is true for Too Little).

Which is an EXTREMELY relative variable.

Take "too much" exercise (since you asked).

If you exercise AND are not replacing lost nutrients, 2 things start happening:

- Your body eats itself (including cardiac muscle, which is why so many anorexics suffer heart attacks) / goes into starvation mode.

- Your body shuts off fertility

Both are self preservation.

It's part of our body's standard operating procedure to deal with famine.

First, convert stored energy & nutrients (fat, muscle, bone, organs) in a fairly predictable way.

Second, defend against loss of those nutrients left (slowed metabolism & turning off fertility, as a fetus is a mondo parasite. All needed nutrients go TO the baby first. "Eating for 2" is actually eating to replace nutrients that have already gone to the fetus )

____

Take 2 women, though.

One is an Olympic athlete.

The other lost her period, her hair, her cognitive function, her skin elasticity.

They both exercise the same amount per day.

Why is one the picture of health, and the other on death's door?

Because one is replacing lost nutrients, and the other one is starving herself.

A good amount of exercise depends on the individual.

- As an athlete I typically exercised 10+ hours a day. 7 days a week.

I consumed about 15,000 calories a day.

- As a marine I exercised 4-24 hours a day.

I consumed between 5,000 & 24,000 calories a day.

- As a mom I exercised about 4 hours a day

I consumed about 1500 calories a day

((Why 1500 instead of 5000? Different level of exercise))

I generally try and

- walk 5mi per day

- participate in a high impact sport (crew, or skiing, or swimming for example) sport 3 times or more a week for at least 4 hours.

After rehabbing an injury... I STARTED with half a mile, and one low impact sport for 20 minutes.

I worked HARDER on that half a mile & 20 minutes, than when Im fit and banging it out.

There's just no "one size fits all" when it comes to exercise.
