I really liked this movie, although maybe that's because I took my 4 year old daughter to it. I think it's the first Disney movie that I have seen where the heroine didn't need the help of a guy to save the day- she did it by herself albeit unwittingly.... right until the end it was pretty formulaic Disney, but then the twist. I liked it.

Did you see Brave?

Vort, I'd be interested to see you flesh this out. I thought the movie was pretty nakedly pandering to the princess set, but that's not exactly new for Disney.

And (spoiler alert) who'd a thought we would ever see the day when Disney presented a tale of love-at-first-sight that turned out not to be love at all?

Frozen was not good but good enough for the kiddos. I, too, was very disappointed. I just thought the characters were forgettable and uninteresting, and the musical numbers were just blahhhhhhhh. Not memorable at all.

I LOVED this movie! I loved the twist, I loved the cgi, and I loved that song the little sister sang trying to get her sister to play with her (yes, I got teary), but I wish the ice guy would have ended up with the queen, he had a true appreciation for her talents. I admit, when the queen did her self-esteem transformation and suddenly gained Jessica Rabbit hips I was scared. But fortunately it turned out all right.

I never thought of that, but you are absolutely right! Now that I think about it, it would have been the perfect scenario to have him walk up those stairs and just go googly eyed over the Queen when she shows up... but then... somebody had to try to save Anna. Too many princesses not enough princes. LOL.

This has been gnawing at me ever since I finally got to see the movie over the weekend. I asked a friend of mine who is a major Disney fanatic if she could think of another example among the animated films. She said, "Maybe Ichabod with Katrina in the Sleepy Hollow movie? Maybe. Other than that I can't really think of any!"

And then someone pointed out Enchanted.

I agree about the princess pandering, but that was a relatively small part of my reaction.

Maybe I was in a bad mood (that I was somehow unaware of), but it just seemed that the movie went from one cynical observation to another. A few random examples:

  • A well-meaning father dooms his daughter to misery from a misguided attempt to help her cope with her gift (or curse).
  • The "love at first sight" trope is -- surprise! -- turned on its head, exposing how utterly foolish and unrealistic it is. Never mind that the wicked perpetrator of deception shows himself to be brave and willing to risk his own well-being to help others not of his party earlier on. We don't have to pretend that everything is black and white. Bad people can do good and even heroic things. That's reality.
  • On the other hand, a memory of good times when you were five is enough to keep alive your love and fondness for a sibling, even after more than a decade of neglect. Realism is fine, but let's not get silly.
  • Breaking out of the mold and casting off the chains of ignorance bound to you by well-meaning but stupid parents (mostly father) means of necessity that you make your dress low-cut and with a long slit up the side. See how free I am? I no longer have to wear modest clothing! Hey, the cold never bothered me, anyway.
  • Oh, by the way, did we forget to mention that having power over ice and coldness of necessity means you have power over warmth and sunshine, so you can single-handedly turn your winterish nightmare into eternal spring? Oops. Apologies for the oversight.

As is often the case, my feelings probably say a lot more about me than they do the movie. But there you have it.

Did I mention the warm-hearted snowman who had absolutely nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with the gist of the story, and was very clearly included solely because he presented great marketing opportunities to the preschool set? Him.

I had already read this thread when I went to see the movie on Saturday, and I kept trying to figure out why you thought it was cynical. So I think maybe you were just in a bad mood. ;)

The character of Hans bothered me a little as well. I don't think he was well-written. I also don't think he was actually malicious...he was just ambitious. They didn't balance the two very well. I think they made the latter just suddenly look like the former.

I really have nothing to say to this, except that it made me laugh. Lol.

Her clothing change I saw as another way she was breaking free of ("letting go") all the rules and fear that had suppressed her as a child. Prior to that she'd always been dressed in such a way that only her face was exposed (high-necked, long-sleeved dresses + gloves). Now she could wear what she wanted, because she didn't need to fear touching something with her skin and exposing her power (like when she took off the gloves at her coronation to take hold of the septer).

And Enchanted kind of had both marriage paradigms. Ya, Giselle doesn't marry the prince she just met, but the ex-fiance of the guy she *does* decide to marry does, and jumps into a whole 'nother animated dimension to do it to boot!
