Penitence

How long ‘til anxious tears be dry?

And quivered sobs hold sway?

In earnest supplication, I

For greater wisdom, pray.

On my knees in pauper’s pose

Pleading for my heart’s respite

Writhing in these fervent throes

A broken spirit made contrite

Stripped of all the self-conceits

And vanity, my ego’s pride

Confessing all occult deceits

Smoldering unplumbed inside

With all humility I must confide

And offer up sincere regret

With restitution thus applied

Maybe then can I forget?

Oh blessed Lord, hear my heart

Undeserving though I be

Let thy forgiving glance impart

And feel Thee smiling down on me.
