Here is a proof that shows why it is difficult for engineers to get rich.

Time is money: t = $

Knowledge is power: K = P

Power definition:  P = W / t

by substitution:  K = W / $

Solve for $:  $ = W / K

Therefore, with a constant W, the smarter you are, the poorer you are.

Or alternatively the smarter you are, the less money you spend to do the same amount of work

I'll rephrase.

Regardless of which is which or whether $ is an expense or income:  As K approaches infinity, $ approaches zero since W by necessity is a finite number. :P

To completely destroy a clever little joke through unwarranted rational analysis is almost criminal. But here you go.

Jamie is right. The equivalency "time is money" is saying that time spent is money spent. Therefore, the final formulation,

$ = W/K

is most correctly read, "Time spent equals work divided by knowledge". This means that knowledge and time spent are inversely proportional: As knowledge increases, time spent decreases. Which is a primary reason we go to school.

Or you can quit working to minimize spending.
