Visions of Glory

My brother is reading the book Visions of Glory by John Pontias, and is interested in hearing people's thoughts and opinions about the book and the ideas it puts forward. If you're familiar with the book, I'd love to hear what you thought of it and how much truth you think it contains.

It's fiction. I believe it to be useful fiction, but the thrust, that we need to be prepared, spiritually and temporally, is the same message the prophets and Apostles have been preaching for the past 1170 years (less the past decade, while the Lord has been preaching His own sermons).

The "ghost stuff" is both improbable and scary because it could be true.

How about reading it for yourself and then using personal revelation and discernment to form an opinion? :)

I take all of these kinds of books with a huge grain of salt. However, this one seems especially fishy to me. I encourage people to check out this book if they want, but life is short and you have to decide if things are worth your time. Also, if something is off base, then you have to unlearn false doctrine, which can also possibly steer you off course.

The FairMormon review above is the one I was referring to, which made me decide not to read this.

By all means, but still, nothing wrong with petitioning the Lord about it, rather than an individual's opinion. :)

Might be worth someone else's time though. :)

OK, this is the last I'll post about this book I haven't even read. But I just wanted to point out that if a book is false doctrine, it's not worth anyone's time. Is this book false doctrine? I don't know. But it smells very fishy

It is filled with doctrinal issues.

So I just listened to this, driving to and from Utah. There were some things that I've thought in my heart and were neat to hear someone else say, and sprinkles of truth; but for the most part, I had to start hearing it as a fictional piece. Because it is. If you read/hear it that way, it's a creative story.

What "ghost stuff"?

Here is one of the tamer passages:

Quote

… I perceived that he was a good man, a returned missionary, and presently serving in his quorum presidency.

My guide said to me, "He is here to view pornography."

I saw eight spirits enter the room. Four of these were evil spirits who had once been mortal, the other four were unborn evil spirits — Satan's minions. The disembodied looked human and wore clothing typical of the period in which they had died. The evil spirits were less substantial, generally smaller, with misshapen features, making them look slightly inhuman. They were agitated, active, jumping around in a frenzy, shouting their commands to the young man in excited voices.

The disembodied spirits said little at first. They had little ability to be heard by the young man. They were there trying to satisfy the sexual passion they had developed during their own lives. There were both male and female spirits. Their sexual addiction had followed them into the spirit world. Their addiction was unending, painful, and impossible to satisfy. It haunted them. They were desperate to try to satisfy it endlessly. They were pleased that they were going to shortly experience it through this young man. They were intent, watching him, urging him on though he could not hear them. They were not looking at the screen; they were watching him closely, putting their faces in his face and screaming at him, mocking him and taunting him. They didn't care about the images; they cared about sharing the body sensation of sexual gratification.

I don't know. John Pontus's narrator isn't in charge of doctrine.

Well it would make sense that there's evil spirits around egging us on to sin.

Pffftt... I very strongly suspect that's what's going on too, judging from the things I've read, mainly Key to the Science of Theology by Parley P. Pratt. But even if it was, that's far from the scariest thing I've seen in my life. Some of the stuff I've heard about IRL from my close family... And I've felt things... Demonic things... Words cannot describe it very well but it is a laughing crying screaming insanity. Like your life is become a spiraling nightmare you cannot wake or escape from. that you're helplessly watching. And if you don't wanna sleep tonight, read up on cult abuse. It's so incredibly bad that many minds literally FRACTURE to deal with the pressure, hence Dissociative Identity Disorder, AKA multiple personality disorder.
