So I was reading something interesting tonight.

This was the exact moment that lightning his the Moroni statue on the Bountiful temple.  See the two orbs of lights?  Some say these are earthquake lights and means that an earthquake is to come shortly after.

I wonder if there is any truth to this,  I guess we shall find out if we have an earthquake very soon.

Just finished the article and boy, there is something I had never heard of before. Either those are earthquake lights, the camera flashes of others taking pictures of Moroni get struck with lightning or fancy Photoshop?

Those aren't earthquake lights.  And they don't come out of the ground days before the earthquake.  They come out more-or-less during the earthquake or immediatly before.

If you live anywhere near the area, I'd challenge you to go drive out there around twilight and see if you notice the two lights in the exact same spots.  They look like simple outdoor vapor lights that might be supercharged by the electric field produced by the atmospheric conditions that caused the lightning in the first place.

I couldn't spot the type, but that's my assessment, as well.

Many street lamps have a light-sensitive cell that turns them on when the sun isn't shining brightly enough. Each lamp has its own controller, and they're not perfectly calibrated, so two lamps, side by side, may not be on at the same time.

Speaking of the S.L.T...

My father, the anti-mormon.  He never made a name for himself, but he did contribute to the body of church criticism.  He worked for the SLC newspapers back in the '70's.  Back then, both Trib and DesNews came out of the same building, off the same presses, and at many folks worked on both.  He, being a drinking, swearing, areligious gambling man, of course preferred the Tribune to the Church's Deseret News.  And he once showed me his "proof" that the church was bad.

He showed me three newspapers for a certain day.  First-run DesNews and Trib, there on page C5, was the same article on gambling.  But the second-run DesNews paper, turn to page C5, and the article had been changed, to a report on charitable activities of some old ladies knitting circle.   My dad's theory was that THE BRETHREN© always got an advance issue of the paper, saw the article on gambling, and forced the change.

(I didn't say it was much of a contribution to the body of church criticism, just that it was a contribution.)

If he were alive today, he'd talk about how the church was behind the photoshopping, trying to maintain it's power over the people through earthquakes (or some such similar opinion.)

Ok, Utah, when God tries shocking you, then shaking you, maybe it's time to give Him your full attention before He has to go back to boils or locusts or something.

He already did the locust thing.  But then he sent seagulls.

There was an earthquake in Utah today. :)  Not a big one.  About 4.1.

I wonder if there are many days when there is not an earthquake in the Valley. Not all tremblers are big enough to register except on sensitive equipment, but I'd guess they are nearly a daily occurrence.

Well, I checked and found it's not a daily thing, but it is frequent:

Sorry 'bout the weird formatting. I tried to fix it, but it only got worse.

On average, Utah experiences over 800 earthquakes per year.  But the 4.0 range is about where you start noticing it.  And it is that level or higher that is a rare thing in Utah.

Generally a 4.1 would be noticeable to people within the epicenter if they were quietly sitting down with only the mildest of distractions.

By 4.5 some would notice even if they had some distraction like an mp3 player or TV going.

The fact that this earthquake (4.0 or so) made the news is an indicator as to how rare such are in Utah.

I heard one of the earthquake light people got turned into a newt, but they got better.  Anyway...

WARNING:  NERD CONTENT

The two orbs of light are probably from high voltage surge arresters.

These arrestors have a semi-conductor in them that is normally dielectric.  When the power grid voltage surges above normal (like a lightning strike) the dielectric properties of the arrester break down creating a direct path to ground.  The path to ground can involve a ball of ionized particles (read- orb or as I call it "ball of fire").  The reclosing circuit breaker on the power grid then sees a dead short and briefly cuts the power.  During this time that the power is off (usually a half second or so) the arrestor regains it's dielectric properties.  The recloser will then try to energize the power grid again and "ding", your lights (and not the earthquake lights) are hopefully back on.  These surge arresters are about the size of a pop can and are located all over the power grid.  Sometimes they explode and start grass fires.

This is why your lights usually blink off when lightning hits.

Lightning only has to strike close to set off the arresters.  The lightning hit Moroni, but that amount of power will almost always find a path into the power grid and create a surge.
