Who thinks the Word of Wisdom needs updating?

Dude, if they ban sugary drinks, fast food, hamburgers and things like that we might as well kiss new converts good bye. Who would join a church where you can't eat junk food once in a while?

2016 was a learning year for my health because I was close to being pre-diabetic. I blame myself for getting out of the habit of exercise and becoming addicted to sugary drinks and fast foods. It has been really hard cutting out soda, hamburgers and other junk foods, I have lessen my intake but havent completely stopped. If the word of wisdom was updated to include abstaining from all coke and pepsi soda drinks I would have the motivation to cut it completely. Considering 600,000 americans die from heart disease (diet related) and only 160,000 die from lung cancer (tobacco) doesnt it make sense for our word of wisdom be updated? Doesnt Satan want us to be slaves to our bodies yet religion gives us commandments to follow that help prevent that from happening? Most commandants are over 100 years old and older.

Modern science and simple observation tells you that surgery drinks, fact food, etc are bad for you.  That is good, and should be listened to.  God commanded us to take care of our bodies.  He doesn't need compel us in every little detail therein.

I agree with you that the WoW needs updating or even needs to be discarded. What I don't understand is why you need the above to be a commandment when you already know you should abstain. Why would a commandment give you more motivation than your own health?

Maybe not junk foods but at least carbonated soda pop. I have a lot of LDS family members that are over weighed because of poor diets but they are some of the most obedient and friendly people. If the saying is true that we take our addictions to heaven with us then they are no different then the sex addicts, drug addicts.

They are incredibly different. While there are levels of addiction I'm always very hesitant when someone confuses "bad habit" with "addiction."

A drug addict can't hold a job because they are doing drugs all the time. A drug addict steals, lies, commits crimes to feed their addiction. A drug addict has no money. A person who eats junk food all the time has a bad habit. While eating can produce feelings of mild euphoria for some people-drugs severely alter your state of mind and make it incredibly difficult to tell what is objective reality and what is part of the "high".  No one would be taken seriously if they said they'd rather have the person in the car behind them smoke a joint or drop acid rather than eat a cheeseburger. Drug addiction and food addictions are totally different.

I've seen people say "Oh, my friend is addicted to sex because he likes porn. Sure he holds a job, has a marriage, has money. has free time, but he is addicted." No, he actually isn't. Same with food.

Well... to be fair... refraining from eating healthy is already against the word of wisdom. Drinking 2 meters of soda a day is too. You may not get a reccemend revoked or lose a calling over it, but you will still lose the spirit, your priesthood will be diminished and the power and authority you carry will be restrained. D+C 89 and prophets teach pretty clearly we are suppose to take care of our bodies.

Sugar isn't bad, fat isn't bad, etc. but taking an excess amount is. I believe that only eating apples for a week straight would also be breaking the WOW.

Along with that, using self mastery in WOW will increase your self mastery against other sins.

I've never known a great priesthood leader that doesn't eat healthy and take care of himself.

I know there was a bit of humour in what you are saying here, but I don't think we should let this decide what commandments we enforce. Imagine the amount of converts we would get if we began allowing coffee and tea. I can't tell you how many people on my mission wouldn't even hear us out because we didn't allow those 2 drinks. That doesn't stop the presidency from enforcing this conmandment.

If you were going to update it, why not update verse 13

Quote

12 Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly;

13 And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.

Grocery stores and refrigerators make verse 13 seem irrelevant now.

However, I don't understand how someone can add to D&C without modern revelation. It doesn't seem right.

"Addiction is a medical condition characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli, despite adverse consequences" - wikipedia

"Don't always trust Wikipedia."-everyone.

Labeling every bad habit as an "addiction" takes away from the horrors of addiction. Bad habits can also ruin your life if you let them.

They can't...  This whole thread is a murmuring because God isn't doing what they want

I know of no man that took this issue of "updating the WOW to include soda pop" to the Lord, the Lord saying NO, and now we are here "murmuring" because "God is not doing what we want", until that happens I tend to think of this thread as awareness instead of murmuring.

There are laws and commandments that were started out of awareness. Wasnt the whole WOW started because Emma complained to Joseph that the men spitting tobacco was disgusting? I would assume that Joseph took it to the Lord and was inspired to create the new commandment called the WOW.

There are health and medical circles on the internet creating awareness of good and bad diets. My intentions is to keep the conversation going so that hopefully and eventually the leaders of our church see the epidemic that is happening and take it to the Lord for counsel.

I get what you are saying my friend. I seriously hope I wasn't overly dismissive or rude. Not my intention and I apologize if I was.

You know of no man that "took the issue" because you are the one not the Call of God to take those question to him on behalf of the church... None of us here are.

That a moment to read section 89 again and you will realize that it address every single one of your concerns.  In addition it the things it says no to... it repeatedly talks about moderation... using sound judgement, being wise.  That is God giving each person a clear and plain path forward.  Tailored to them

Unfortunately people choose not to follow God's instruction, instead they phone in the bare minimum to get a recommend.  Why would God give more when so many struggling with what they have already be given?  And on the other side why would he give more when he sees how many people point self-righteous fingers at others judging them for there  perceived failures?

If he had been rude he would have accused you of being a KISS fan.  If he was trying to offend you, then it would be The Ramones.  Cause 'gator is like that.
