Star Trek or Star Wars?

And these were the robots that I feared so much (and still I do; maybe it's a psychological trauma from the Sixtees when I was a young boy getting confrontated with those horrible machines on tv. Pray or run! Or better do both. Or draw your laser gun, if you have one, I didn't when I was young and don't even have one today.

I guess the closest equivalent for us would have been the Daleks. Many a kid of my generation would hide behind the couch when they appeared...

That by the way is the original Doctor Who (played by William Hartnell) with his granddaughter Susan (Carol Anne Ford).

The oldest joke about the Daleks was an alleged design flaw...

daleks3.jpg

...but unfortunately the writers (eventually) came up with a solution:

Remembrance-of-the-Daleks-450x240-437x23

That's right...Daleks can fly, so the joke's on us!

P.S. I mentioned Blake's 7 earlier: I've read that in the finale of Season 2, when our galaxy is invaded by aliens from Andromeda and Blake is forced to fight alongside his arch-enemy Servelan for the survival of humanity, the writers originally wanted the invaders to be Daleks in a Doctor Who crossover. I think it's a shame they didn't go with this idea. It would certainly have been criticized as shark-jumping, but maybe that's what was needed. Instead the show limped lamely on for another two seasons: Gareth Hunt (who played Blake himself) left in Season 3 and Season 4 didn't even have Servelan in it: she died (in rather stupid circumstances, ill-befitting an evil genius like her) at the end of Season 3.

Jacqueline Pierce as the evil (and totally cool) Servelan, inserted for reference. After her "stupid death" ("~~it's funny cos it's true") there was little point in watching that show - though I suppose Avon could be pretty cool when he was in a mean mood.

1966, actually.

The seventies were not a good decade for Star Trek fans, with William Shatner going through a period of homelessness and "that other" science fiction franchise coming into being . . .

Bring the Jedi (including the force and light sabers) into the Star Trek universe and then we're talking.

Even though I am more of a Star Trek fan, I would love to see that. However due to the "prime directive" Star Wars would blow them out of space, while they debate the moral implications of fighting.

I wouldn't say you are right, it was not the worst decade. See those poor and dull low budget series like "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" or "Star Trek: Voyager" and others of the Nineties. Only dialogues and no action, no ideas and only stupid and ridiculous with rubber or plastic styled faces and even more ridiculous appearing "aliens" with human characteristics and human anatomy except their ears or whatever... science fiction? No, tomfoolery seemingly taken from the old moth trunk of motion pictures' very beginning.

Indeed - I always thought Star Trek reached its apex in the Pickard era.

Okay, something new was time travelling in the Picard series

The original series Star Trek had some time travelling too.

Did you watch the 1984 epic science fiction film "Dune"...? It was based on a 1965 epic novel by the American author Frank Herbert.

Yes I actually quite like Lynch's "Dune". They made a number of changes from the original novel, but most of these worked quite well (the wierding units for example, or the Harkonnens' heart plugs).

The only thing I didn't like was the ending - which I thought was very lame indeed.

I totally love Frank Herbert's original novel "Dune", which I first read about 30 years ago - but "Dune Messiah" and "Children of Dune" less so. One gets the feeling at the end of CoD...

***SPOILER ALERT***

...what a horrible fate Paul Muad Dib escaped, but to which his son Leto sacrificed himself. But for what? Who would become a human/sandworm mutant just to create a stagnant society that tolerates no freedom of thought? I've been meaning to read "God Emperor of Dune" for many years but never got around to it.

Every Star Trek series - TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise - has had multiple episodes involving time travel. I consider it a feature of the Star Trek franchise. Episodes with time travel in the original series include:

s01e19 - Tomorrow is Yesterday; s01e28 - The City on the Edge of Forever; s02e26 - Assignment: Earth; s03e23 - All Our Yesterdays

I may have missed some.

Oh, I forgot about the Animated Series. I've only seen one episode of that but a quick google search suggests it may only have had one time travel episode.

That Raumpatrouille show looks promising. And with only seven episodes, I sort of would like to watch the whole series.

But the only thing I'd like to know: Did Leto II become a sandworm mutant...?

Well this was how it started:

And this was how it ended...

And this was his cat...

(Seriously though, poor kitty!)

The original picture I linked was very funny, but arguably a tiny bit pornographic.

Also some people think this is where Jabba the Hut originated:

Dune and the john carter of mars series had a lot of inspirations for star wars...

Dune was also a big inspiration for warhammer 40000

Continuing the spoilers - Dude's golden path meant to squeeze humanity into stagnation for just long enough to have it explode out into the universe in oodles of ways that never would have happened if Leto just had let things be.  Overall, it was the right thing to do for humanity.  I mean, assuming dude was really a god who could see all the paths of humanity, and that one really was the way out of stagnation and eventual collapse.

I guess she was not degenerated...  Quite frankly: it was miles ahead of those degenerated kindergarten movies like Star Trek or Star Wars... :D

I have heard of Perry Rhodan. I have some of the books and even a board game or two with Perry Rhodan.

Some cowboy dudes went riding out one nice and sunny day
Upon a ridge they rested as they went along their way
When all at once a sandworm by a roaring sound they saw
Plowing through the ragged skies and up a cloudy draw

Worm ri-derrrs in the skyyyyyyy!
