Required no, once endowed, expected. There are no garment police save that when you renew a recommend, you are asked if you wear them day and night. My own experience, there are times I simply didn't wear them, I didn't feel right, something nearly unwell inside, I felt at odds, unprotected, not in sync. When I returned to wearing them, I felt better, they remind me of of important promises I made not just in my endowment, but in my sealing as well, I feel more a part of my wife when wearing them. I strongly suspect that the holy spirit speaks to one often about the wearing and the intent. I am no where near the example cookie cutter mormon, I just try over and over to be a better one each day.

As to private or sacred, I will mirror my response. In military service, oft there were times it was necessary to conduct work sans my ACU blouse and my sand colored garment shirt was visible. No one ever noticed or cared. I think the spirit understood.

Funny timing I would see this, I've just ordered more replacements from LDS distribution yesterday, I am hard on garments.

For those not wearing garments YET, they are somewhat of a fuss, but they are unwarranted concerns. Once you've been in yours for a short bit, you stop thinking about them, you just wear them.

Hi Roo!

A quick answer to your question.  Yes, you choose to wear garments.  You choose it when you make your temple covenants.  Once you make that covenant, then you are required to wear it... that is, you become beholden to those covenants.  Make sense?

So, I have 2 boys, 16 and 14.  They've been wearing undergarments in the same style as regular garments since they grew out of their diapers.  It's a way for me to establish modesty standards for my kids.   I wasn't paying close enough attention to remember if you're a boy or a girl.  There's a difference in the sleeve length for the top - the female garments are a capped sleeve, the male garments have t-shirt sleeves.  But both have the same style bottoms where they go almost to the knee.

So, it's pretty easy for the boys to find undergarments in the same style as garments - I just get the boys' undershirt.  Hanes is selling them right now for a 5-pack +3 free for $6.47 at Walmart for their back-to-school specials.   And then they pair it with the long leg boxer briefs.  Hanes also has an 8-pack package of these on sale right now.  For females, it's a bit trickier because the camisoles are usually sleeveless.  And they don't sell long-leg boxer briefs for females at places like Walmart.  As I don't have daughters, I've never really thought about what I would get for daughters underrgarrnents.  @zil, did you wear garment-style underwear when you were a kid?

Hmm... sounds like I might have a business idea...

No.  But we knew that garments come down to the knee and have short sleeves, and that our clothing must cover those same areas, so we were mentally prepared for the change in underclothes, and didn't need to make changes in outer clothing.

Thank you! It says they shouldn't be displayed or exposed to view of people who don't understand it.  I guess that answers my question.  At my work, there is zero privacy for changing.  I don't know how someone would get around that.

I remember a story about a famous athlete (this was before Steve Young.  So, much less famous than that) who changed into his garments in the locker room.  Most people didn't care about it.  A few made fun.  But one of his friends finally asked him why he wore those things.

He looked at his Catholic friend who was wearing a crucifix from his neck and asked,"Why do you wear that?"

"It reminds me of God wherever I go."

"That's why I wear these."  Since that moment, this friend would always shout down the detractors who made fun of him for it.

I think the "on display" thing really means an active decision.  My interpretation is that we dress modestly enough to cover them up.  And where we do find ourselves like in a locker room, we don't "put them on display".  We simply change just as anyone else in the locker room would.

It's amazing what happens when you give respect to another persons religion, isn't it? I know of Catholics who make stupid jokes about other religions than go into cardiac arrest if anyone says anything in jest about their church. And yes, I know it's not a Catholic thing. I'm sure there are LDS who make offensive jokes about other religions but jump up and down if someone says something about Mormons.

I know this sounds self serving and I'm sure that everyone says the same thing about their religion, but I think LDS can take jokes better than people of other religions can. I know that every religion has snowflakes and hothouse flowers, but generally speaking LDS are better at joking around. Not an insult to people of other religions.

@Grunt The church makes special garments designed for active duty soldiers that can be seen by others. In fact it produces a range of materials specifically for soldiers, here's the link https://store.lds.org/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Category3_715839595_10557_3074457345616706322_-1_Y_image_0

All the links to military garments sends you to the 'contact us' page.  All other links send you through a feedback loop.

@Carborendum Thanks I'll delete it.

I found out why.  You can't order them online.  You have to go through a special process.  From what I can see, the only difference is that the markings are silkscreened or reverse stitched (a method which allows the threads to only be seen on one side) onto the inside of the cloth.

The colors will vary with the branch of service.  For instance, AF personnel can get blue garments.

@Grunt You're correct you need a membership number to view garments online. But I'm glad to see special provsions are made so our members in the Military and First Responders can wear their garments. I'm not surprised, I'd just never thought about it before.

Depends what you mean by "view".  The MormonNewsroom video Mureen linked is 100% church approved and it shows garments.  It's not super close up and obviously it's not the online store where you pick out different styles etc.

I think we as members need to remember that in 2017, there are no secrets anymore. A quick Google search can give you any information you need. I'm not saying it's good or bad, but it is reality.

I can appreciate that.  But it isn't about keeping things secret.  You can find porn online anywhere.  But that doesn't mean we all can dress immodestly.

It's about having sacred things in our lives.  Others may defile them.  But we don't.  That's really the point of having garments.  To remind us of that fact.  And keeping them covered is part of the "ordinance" for lack of a better term, of how we keep them sacred.

I agree totally and understand what you are saying as well, for sure. Just because it's out there doesn't mean we need to add to it. No question.
