SALT LAKE CITY — As the emblems of the sacrament were being passed during the Fallon Third Ward’s sacrament meeting early Sunday afternoon 60 miles east of Reno, Nevada, John Kelly O’Connor sat on a couch in the west foyer just outside the chapel with members of his LDS congregation who had arrived late for the meeting.

When the sacrament service was complete and as the meeting’s first speaker began to talk, O’Connor, 48, stood up, walked through the chapel’s west door, drew a handgun and at point-blank range shot and killed the man who for years had been assigned by ward leaders to serve him and watch over him, witnesses said.

This is so sad.  :(

For those of you who use Facebook, here is a public post by one of the members of that ward (I don't know this woman, it was shared by one of my friends.)   If you don't have Facebook, in a nutshell, she said that mental illness and drugs were involved in John shooting his friend.   She asked for prayers for all involved, especially the children who were among the witnesses to this terrible tragedy.

Who shoots someone in Sacrament meeting? Did this ever get explained?

Why did the guy want to kill a specific person?

He targeted his home teacher. Apparently he had a mental illness and there were drugs involved.

Yeah. But that's still not an answer. Even insanity covers a kind of internal logic - Did he think his home teacher was offensive? Thought he was better than him?(Spoiler alert: He was). Did he think his home teacher was a maniac demon possessed by an international consortium of mind-control devils?

Doesn't matter the reason.  He was sick and did something no reason could ever justify.

This only happened yesterday, so we don't have many answers yet, perhaps we never will. But I think this is a POSSIBILITY....

Yep because this kind of thing happens every week. I can't remember the last sacrament meeting I went to where someone wasn't shot 😕

It rarely happens.  However, it happened to him.  I've never needed a first aid kit hiking, either.  I still carry one.  The list of precautions I choose to take for myself and my family is basically endless.

Sorry to hear you need a gun to feel able to protect yourself and your family. You must live in a bad neighbourhood or have dodgy friends.

@Grunt, I don't personally carry, and I am pretty Liberal, BUT I totally understand where you are coming from on this.  I love your analogy to the first aid kit.  Honestly, if that happened in my ward, I would be relieved to know that one of the good guys had a weapon.  Things could have been so much worse than they were.

Yeah because every one with a gun starts shooting at one guy with a gun results in less people being hurt. Nonsense

I have an obligation to care for my family and community.  That's why I practice preparedness in most areas of my life, including self-defense.

I agree.  My husband and I work hard on preparedness.  You would probably love my husband.  He gardens and knows about wild edible plants...he has all kinds of skills that would be helpful in a disaster.  I hope he never has to use them, but I'm glad he has them.

That's awesome.  I'm sure we could swap some good stories.  It's why I moved where I am and started a small farm.  Food in the basement is great, but a self-sustaining homestead is not only insurance for the future, but you're getting the immediate benefit of fresh food without the chemicals.

Yes, you two would get along great.  My husband would love a small farm.  But since he can't do that, he raises rabbits....I try to tell him he shouldn't eat CUTE things.  LOL
