This is sort of an "off the record" statement, hardly a prophetic utterance binding on the church, but Joseph Smith apparently had some strong feelings about things too:

I wander if the Nephites took this policy a little too far? I'm not saying they did, I'm just asking the question.

Yes, but keep i mind that at this point  the people had become wicked...Mormon says their wickednessled to their destruction. 

That isn't the same as defending yourself from a threat.
