I love your concern and questioning on this. It is hard to answer this question because I solid yes or no would mean we could never shop at a grocery store that even sells coffee. That or it would be ok to invest in the adult toys industry.

Filthy lucre is a real issue. We should not make money via sinful or exploitive processes. To me, investing in a casino, alcohol company, tobacco company, or any direct producer of such substances or immoral activity would fit under filthy lucre. Investing in companies that are associated with these I would Not day isn’t wrong.

Agreed we can make anything into a problem, but these companies listed are very close to pure plays in their respective industries with the exception or Pfizer and Rockwell and Crown. Possibly the Hotels may not be, but keep in mind in Vegas they give away free hotel rooms and filet mignon. It isnt because they have a sale on, it is because the casino is financing it.

oh and thanks for yelling at the hound...lol

The difficult part about the gospel is that the more you know, the more you realize the certain commandments and counsels are more difficult than originally thought.

Just know this, as I said above, Filthy lucre is a real thing and you ought to avoid it. I’m sure you know this but there isn’t direct guidance on how to deal with it so ultimately it is up to you.

IfnI were you, I would find my line and then pull it back a little bit more to show God that I am seeking to avoid filthy lucre more than I am seeking wealth

How hard is it to say whether or not you would invest in a tobacco stock or any of the others?

Given how smoking rates are plummeting investing in tobacco companies now would be a horrible idea, morality aside. Phillip Morris (whatever it's calling itself now) won't be here in a decade.

I think you would be proud of me.,, I followed your orders from the other thread and did some reading on my own. I would be interested to hear your opinion.

As soon as evidence of you *actually* doing some real research of your own and starting to own your own relationship with God, I'll comment on that.

Right now, all I see is evidence of that you're once again going anti-mormon sites to be spoon-fed their biased junk, choosing to be infantized, and posting here under false pretenses.

No, this is a flat out troll putting others in charge of his/her destiny.

That and generally when someone uses the term "Socially responsible  <Blank>"  its a short cut way of saying. "If you do not do it my way you are worse then Hitler"

Too many people think that their way is the "only right way" and all other right minded spiritually in tune people will clearly see it.  Which means anyone that does not agree is defective mentally, spiritually etc.

Now there is some good discussion that can be had on that topic, if all parties are willing to discuss...  But when the OP talks about holding these investments for years... but is just now questioning the wisdom of it... And yet will not explain why he is suddenly questioning it.  That calls into question his real intent.

Some religious people think this way too, in fairness.

I was not excluding religious... in fact they were very much in the cross hairs of my statement.. (Along with a lot of others)

Good, then we agree.

Fun with google translate. :)

Either my Latin is terrible (which it is) or Google's Latin is not up to snuff (which is also true). At least I remembered to put the "ph-" instead of "f" for philippinae. I was pretty proud of myself for that.

Yeah.  That site is wrong.  They're calling Pilipino Tagalog.  Here's the easy test - the Tagalog for "airplane" is "salipawpaw".  In Pilipino, it is "eroplano" - as it shows on that site.  "Papa" in Tagalog, is "tatay".

P.S. - you must be Bisaya if... you differentiate Pilipino (the national language) from Tagalog (the northern dialect).

And while we're derailing this thread... let me just tell you about what makes the Bisaya dialect super cool.

So, in English - you have stumble or fall (which is a word with several meanings including a Season).  So you might wonder... how do you say stumble (or fall) in Bisaya?  Well, it's not that easy.  In Pilipino it's not too complicated - stumble is "matisod", fall is "mahulog".  In Bisaya you have to specify HOW he stumbled or fell... so, just a few examples:

pandol - when you're walking or running and something makes you trip but not fall down.
dagma - when you're walking or running and you fall down.
dusmo - when, in the process of falling down, your face hits the ground.
ligas - same as pandol but you tripped without the help of any object.

etc. etc.
