Protein Poisoning

Recommended Posts

Protein Poisoning is often called "Rabbit Poisoning" because rabbit meat has virtually no fat.  And when eating protein, it is important to eat a good deal of fat with it, otherwise problems develop.

But recently, Johns Hopkins McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine.  Weighed in on the consumption of protein drinks saying, the protein levels can be damaging in a different way.

Proteins from protein drinks are often of a type that is easy to absorb.  So, you're body gets more of it and faster than other forms of protein.  But Johns Hopkins warns that unless you're a high functioning athlete or recovering from injury, this may do more harm than good.

Protein drinks/shakes are for those who are building muscle.  There's a ratio to it.  How much protein to consume with your body mass and work-out routine and your whole food diet.  Also when to drink it - usually only before or after a work-out routine, the rest of the time you intake protein through whole foods.

Protein shake as a meal replacement is not a good idea in my opinion.  But I'm no expert.

Depends. It's really more about daily macronutrients than per-meal macronutrients. If one is getting what one needs in a day then it really doesn't matter whether a protein shake is called a "meal replacement" or thought of that way or not.
