Favorite April 2019 Conference Moments?

Recommended Posts

My favorite moment from this Conference Weekend was watching a group at DataFest go from completely despondent that they hadn't found anything interesting in the data set, to settling on a "mildly interesting question," putting together an analysis, and then winning the competition outright.  The look on their face when it was announced that they had the best analysis and presentation was priceless.

One of my favorite moments came as the last session ended without some of the much anticipated and rumored changes.   I am thinking that perhaps many listened to conference expecting spiritual candy and instead being fed high quality spiritually nutritional food.

I found presidents Nelson's priesthood session talk interesting in light of the thread "repentance and language".

Not my favorite moment, but unfortunately a necessary moment: The prophet feels the need to instruct the membership of the Church not to cheer temple announcements as if they're in the bleachers at a football game.

To be honest, I liked it when people cheered last time.  It's great news, so it feels natural to react.  That said, I do get where he's coming from and would have stayed quiet had I been there.

Watching Joel Osteen makes me want to take a shower afterwards and cry.

With all due respect to him and his fans, he's not a pastor. He's a motivational speaker. And there is a huge difference.

I enjoyed several of the talks; I can't remember all my favorites.  One that readily comes to mind though was Elder Bednar's talk about temples.  I love how he spelled it out so clearly what we can and cannot talk about to our kids regarding the temple.  I was trying to take notes, but couldn't keep up.  I finally just wrote in my notes..."read the talk and highlight" LOL.   Some talks I just wrote a word or two about the subject....so....

I also really loved Sis. Eubanks talk, and Elder Gong is quickly becoming a favorite speaker.

To be fair, the sons of God shouted for joy when the foundations of the earth were laid. Likewise, the hymn says that we'll sing and we'll shout with the armies of heaven to God and the Lamb.

General Conference is apparently not the place to do so, however.

The thing that stood out to me the most was that the work of gathering Israel is hastening as the time of the Second Coming is drawing close(r?).

Being told to be reverent for the announcements was nice. Felt that was a long time coming.

A few conferences ago, Pres. Nelson appeared "tickled" at the behavior.  I thought it was irreverent. Now he asks for people to be more reverent.

I don't see critics pointing to this as yet another "policy change" showcasing the fickle nature of revelation.

My grandmother returned to church for her last decade in life after a 60 year absence.

Mine too!  One of my favorite memories of her is the day she received her endowments and was sealed to her husband and children who had already passed to the other side.

His father always encouraged him to preach, but Joel would politely decline time and time again until one day in October 1999 when his father was admitted to the hospital with kidney complications. Joel finally agreed to preach the next Sunday, and his father passed the following week. Joel’s first sermon was the last his father ever heard. Joel and his wife, Victoria, were suddenly thrust into full-time leadership of Lakewood Church.

[...]

Today the ministry is radically impacting lives all over the world through live, televised, and online church services. Each week, Joel’s sermons are broadcast by television into every U.S. television market and to over 100 nations around the world. In addition, Joel’s weekly sermons are streamed live over the internet allowing his inspirational messages to reach into virtually every nation.

“Half the people who watch us don’t go to church,” he says. “And so that was our goal: How do we get outside of the church? I want to talk to the people who think, I’m not a religious person. When Jesus was here, you know he didn’t stay in the synagogue. He went out in the marketplace, and so that’s what we try to do.”

- Joel Osteen

Osteen clearly considers himself a pastor, and advertises himself as such.

And I find it ironically humorous that part of Osteen's self-sales job is telling people how non-religious he is.

I believe you are referring to this:?

Quote

I want to talk to the people who think, I’m not a religious person.

I think that was a case of poor punctuation.

Quote

I want to talk to the people who think, "I’m not a religious person."

Help?

And I consider myself tolerant, even though I hate you right wing Nazis. And everyone who disagrees with me.
And @mirkwood considers himself a woman.

Correction - Nazi is short for someone that is a member of the "National Socialists German Workers Party".  Socialists are left wing (so also is anyone that leans liberal), not to be confused as right wing.

Noticing the laptop bag Pres. Nelson has had on him throughout the conference made me wonder:  does the LDS Church have a “football”?  What would it be?

It's all those keys that the leaders of the church hold.  You gotta keep them together somehow.

You too?  I thought the same thing after his talk.  And of course I have a soft spot for him.  He and I share the same birthdate.  Month and day anyway.  He's a couple of years older.

Uh.... Did you read what you quoted?

"seek [your wife's] counsel and listen. Her input will improve your output."
