New California Sex-Ed

I'm not a fan of sex-ed being taught in school at all.  I think that should be left to the families.  As a homeschooler, it would be easy for me to say "Well, that doesn't concern me or my family."  But that would be unwise, because my kids associate with kids from public school all the time, and I'm sure the kids will be talking about these issues.  In the video, the first guy says, (essentially) nothing to worry about, they're just guidelines, we respect families, you can opt out...it might sound reasonable to some....BUT notice when the interviewer presses him a bit.  Then it come out that...oh, well, no you can't opt out of your Kindergarten being taught about Gender Identity.  I wonder if the interview had been longer and she had time to press him some more what else would have come out.  Perhaps this sort of thing (as goes California so goes the nation....that's what I've always been told) is one of the reasons for the emphasis on Gospel Centered Home.  Our children are going to need more than a couple hours of church on Sunday to combat this kind of thinking.

/facepalm California

We live in Northern California and have homeschooled all 11 of our children.

I had a weak moment about 10 years ago and took a tour of the local school (grades k-6) with my wife and eldest 4 children (concerns about public sports, transcripts, and college applications).

Our tour guide was an employee of the school who also happened to be LDS. At one point during the tour we asked about sex education.  She went on and on about how wonderful their program was.  About how they have specialists trained in teaching about sexual awareness and sexual harassment, etc.  I explained that we would want our children to opt out of that class.  She stated that it was mandatory.  I then asked how big a problem sexual harassment was in the school???  We abandoned the tour at that point.

Our children have done fine.  We have them read books and write a report weekly, as well as math online.  At age 14 they start taking BYU online college credit courses.

The eldest 4 have all been accepted to BYU as transfer students (3 in Provo & 1 in Idaho), and only one of them took the SAT.  Our prep school has a considerably higher college placement and retainment rate than the local public schools...

We totally neglected to teach them anything about gender awareness.  Masturbation was discussed with the children on a personal not classroom basis and Im sure that our delivery was considerably different that that of the State of California.
