Songs that Don't Make Sense

I wish songwriters would think their lyrics out a bit more carefully:

1. The Righteous Brothers: "You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your lips." How would he even know this unless he kept his own eyes open? Sounds like he's lost some "loving feeling" of his own.

2. Carly Simon: "I'll bet you think this song is about you." The song is about him! It can be about him without being in praise of him. It would be more a sign of vanity if he thought it wasn't about him, but about some other conceited man, and he's thinking "aren't I so wonderful not being vain like him?"

3. Chris de Burgh: "Close the shutters, do not cry, there's a new moon in the sky." Earlier in the same song he told us that "a big fat moon is dancing on the sea". In the time it's taken him to sing 11 lines, the moon has gone through half its complete orbit.

4. REO Speedwagon: "And if I have to crawl upon the floor, come crashing through your door." How can you come crashing through a door if you're crawling on the floor? How would you get enough momentum up, shuffling on your hands and knees? Unless it was a very rotten door that just collapsed when you nudged it with your head.

It doesn't make sense.

This sounds like family prayer time. Sibling X accuses sibling Y of having their eyes open during the prayer. Hah.

The entire song Lips of an Angel by Hinder makes absolutely zero sense.

It's really good to hear your voice saying my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words - it makes me weak
And I never wanna say goodbye
But, girl, you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel

All that... only to say this:

Well, my girl's in the next room
Sometimes I wish she was you

And he says Sometimes - adding insult to injury.

Oh, it makes perfect sense. He's just a terrible human being.

Do you know who the back up singer is in that? Mick Jagger. If you listen closely you can hear his accent in the later parts of the song.

I've thought of another one:

5. James Blunt: "She smiled at me on the subway / She was with another man / But I won't lose no sleep on that / 'Cause I've got a plan". In the very next verse he says: "And I don't know what to do'Cause I'll never be with you." He doesn't know what to do?? He just told us he had a plan!!

I am the Walrus by the Beatles:

I am he as you are he as you are me
And we are all together
See how they run like pigs from a gun
See how they fly
I'm crying

Sitting on a corn flake
Waiting for the van to come
Corporation T-shirt, stupid bloody Tuesday
Man you've been a naughty boy
You let your face grow long

I am the egg man
They are the egg men
I am the walrus
Goo goo g'joob

Mr. City policeman sitting
Pretty little policemen in a row
See how they fly like Lucy in the sky
See how they run
I'm crying
I'm crying, I'm crying, I'm crying

Yellow matter custard
Dripping from a dead dog's eye
Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess
Boy, you've been a naughty girl
You let your knickers down

I am the egg man
They are the egg men
I am the walrus
Goo goo g'joob

Sitting in an English garden
Waiting for the sun
If the sun don't come you get a tan
From standing in the English rain

I am the egg man (How do you do sir?)
They are the egg men (The man maintains a fortune)
I am the walrus
Goo goo g'joob, goo goo goo g'joob

Expert, texpert choking smokers
Don't you think the joker laughs at you (Ho ho ho, hee hee hee, hah hah hah)
See how they smile like pigs in a sty
See how they snide
I'm crying

Semolina Pilchard
Climbing up the Eiffel tower
Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna
Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allen Poe

I am the egg man
They are the egg men
I am the walrus
Goo goo g'joob, goo goo goo g'joob
Goo goo g'joob, goo goo goo g'joob, goo goo

Here is one of my all-time favorites, one that @mirkwood, @MormonGator, and possibly a few others might appreciate. Awesome song with engaging lyrics that have no discernible meaning. (For the record—no pun intended—the Some Enchanted Evening live version is the best, but the Metallica cover is also outstanding.)

The clock strikes twelve and moondrops burst
Out at you from their hiding place
Like acid and oil on a madman's face
His reason tends to fly away
Like lesser birds on the four winds
Like silver scrapes in May
And now the sand's become a crust
Most of you have gone away

Come on, Susie dear, let's take a walk
Just out there upon the beach
I know you'll soon be married
And you'll want to know where the wind comes from
Well, it's never said at all
On the map that Carrie reads
Behind the clock back there, you know,
At the Four Winds Bar

Four winds at the Four Winds Bar
Two doors locked and windows barred
One door let to take you in
The other one just mirrors it

In hellish glare and inference
The other one's a duplicate
The queenly flux, eternal light
Or the light that never warms

The clock strikes twelve and moondrops burst
Out at you from their hiding place
Miss Carrie nurse and Susie dear
Would find themselves at Four Winds Bar
It's the nexus of crisis
And the origin of storms
Just the place to hopelessly encounter time
And then came me

Call me Desdenova
The eternal light
These gravely digs of mine
Will surely prove a sight
And don't forget my dog
Fixed and consequent

Astronomy

A star

Another great BOC song: Real World

Rains of fish and rains of frogs
Arias sung by mongrel dogs
Whispers from the desert stones
Divinations in lizard bones

Something beyond is reaching out to you
Something beyond
Is reaching out
Yeah

Discs that stretch into cigars
Angels buy drinks in skid row bars
Virgin mary winks from the sky
Trees twist into secret signs

Something beyond is reaching out to you
Something beyond
Is reaching out

Strange We think our lives are real
Strange Amusement parks, our business deals
Strange Stranger still our empty lives
TV replacing kids and wife
Strange Lives consumed with soapy talk
Lives lived in fear of taking a walk

Oh the real world is bizarre enough for me
Oh the real world - bizarre enough for me

We're drifting in the waiting room
Call it real, but call me real soon
The world is living Gaia's at hand
Hear her laughing in earthquake land

Something beyond is reaching out to you
Something beyond
Is reaching out
Something beyond is reaching out to you
Something beyond
Is reaching out

Reaching out

This one is pretty senseless too.

You show us everything you've got
You keep on dancin' and the room gets hot
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You say you wanna go for a spin
The party's just begun, we'll let you in
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You keep on shoutin', you keep on shoutin'

I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day

You keep on saying you'll be mine for a while
You're lookin' fancy and I like your style
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You show us everything you've got
Baby, baby that's quite a lot
And you drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You keep on shoutin', you keep on shoutin'

I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day

Typical KISS SDR&R tune.

But Beth, what can I do?

I'm one of the biggest Kiss fans in the world. I was at the convention where Vinnie Vincent went back in the public eye in Atlanta a few years ago. But I really, really hate that song.

Quick off-topic question only tangentially related to this thread:

Why does everyone flip for Pearl Jam's cover of Love Reign O'er Me? It's an almost exact, note-for-note, lick-for-lick reproduction of The Who's original, a paint-by-numbers cover that, as far as I can see, adds nothing at all to the original. What do you get from PJ's version that the original lacks? Eddie Vedder singing? So the heck what? He literally copies Roger Daltry in Every Freaking Note He Sings.

This is not to hate on Pearl Jam. But unless you're a tribute band, which I gather Pearl Jam doesn't aspire to be, the only purpose of a cover is to give a new or at least varied interpretation to an already existing song. Pearl Jam's cover absolutely does not do that, not to even the least degree. If I had never heard PJ's cover before and I heard it on the radio or something, I would assume it was the original, but that the playback was a little bad, so it didn't sound exactly right.

If anyone reading this can explain why they think PJ's cover is actually worthwhile, I'd love to hear the explanation.

Pearl Jam is famous for cover songs, @Vort. During their concerts it's not uncommon of them to cover three or four classic rock songs. I don't get it either. When I go to a Struts show, I want to hear their music, not covers. However, when I saw Stryper a few weeks ago they covered the old Firehouse classic "All She Wrote" and I loved it. I think it's because a former Firehouse guitarist now plays in Stryper.

"All She Wrote" was a fun little tune. "Don't Treat Me Bad' was off that same album, and I liked (and still like) it.

They have a good acoustic album too. Firehouse was underrated. They are known for their two ballads-Look Into Your Eyes and Love of a Lifetime, but their first album was great.

And oh yeah, they were named after a Kiss song.
