I read that Moroni was a man, a prophet (?) and son of another prophet, Mormon.   What I read said that when Moroni died he became the angel whom Joseph Smith saw.

It is my understanding that upon death a man becomes an exalted man, like Heavenly Father (or that he continues to work towards that exaltation).  Do LDS consider angel different beings than men?  How/why did Moroni become a different being all-together?

From our chuch website:

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/gs/angels?lang=eng

Angels

There are two kinds of beings in heaven who are called angels: those who are spirits and those who have bodies of flesh and bone. Angels who are spirits have not yet obtained a body of flesh and bone, or they are spirits who have once had a mortal body and are awaiting resurrection. Angels who have bodies of flesh and bone have either been resurrected from the dead or translated.

Our chuch believes that everyone will be resurrected, but at different times.  I would presume that Moroni was resurrected when he was because he had a work to do.

(To best answer this I'm going to break the original post up in a weird way).

"Angel" means "messenger".  Yes, Moroni was the messenger to Joseph Smith in this case.   LDS Christians believe that everyone is the same "species" (for horrible want of a better word).  And "angel" is a person who's being a messenger (such as Moroni).

This does differ from other Christians faiths whom regard God as one "species", man another and angels another (if not multiple species).

Such transformation does not happen instantly upon death.  In fact, with a handful of special exceptions (such as Moroni) LDS Christians believe that most people aren't resurrected until Christ's second coming.  Let alone exalted.
