Salt Lake Temple Capstone Opened

Recommended Posts

This is very disappointing, to say the least. The people that sealed the capstone basically poured concrete onto everything in the capstone. Yeah, paper does not do well in moisture. Hopefully the new capstone will be better managed.

The cornerstone was opened twenty-five years or so ago, and those materials hadn’t fared well either.

It always struck me that the point of a cornerstone ceremony is to have the materials stay in the building as long as it stands; and with a historic structure, there’s something special about knowing that the building contains materials hidden up to the Lord by Brigham Young or Wilford Woodruff or whoever.  I hope we don’t make a habit of opening up the ones from other temples.

Did I hear that right, that Pictures of Joseph Smith and Hyrum we’re lost in there due to the moisture?

Quote

The topstone and the granite block upon which it immediately rests form a sphere. Within the lower half a cavity had been prepared; and in this were placed certain books and other articles, so that, as the capstone was laid, it formed a secure and massive lid to this stone receptacle. The stone contains a copy of the Holy Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Voice of Warning, Spencer's Letters, Key to Theology, Hymn Book, Compendium, Pearl of Great Price, and some other books; also photographs of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, George Q. Cannon, and Joseph F. Smith, a photograph of the Temple as it appeared at the time; and, in addition, an engraved tablet of copper setting forth the principal dates in the history of the building and bearing the names of the general authorities of the Church as they stood April 6, 1853, and as constituted at the time of the capstone ceremony, April 6, 1892. (Talmage, The House of the Lord)

Yes, the video says the photographs of Joseph and Hyrum are damaged beyond repair, but they are not the originals.

Fun fact: when the Jerusalem temple is finally built Satan will be bound in the cornerstone. Then 1000 years later when the temple needs renovation curious saints will open the cornerstone and loose him.

Hopefully he will be a little soggy too
