Traveler
Perhaps this thread can address some of the issues with liberal and conservative thinking outside of patrician bickering and party line speaking. This Executive Order identifies 35 critical elements for the USA to continue as a “World Power”. But these elements are identified as necessary for the USA to remain sovereign. My question is – what about free markets and free trade? If the USA continues to be involved in wars or finds defense of the nation necessary for national security – these elements are critical logistics for being able to win most any conflict. The reason is that high tech electronics depend heavily on a secure supply of these elements (among others). However, the reason these 35 elements were directly address is that currently the USA must rely on supply chain sources that are somewhat adversarial. Mainly China and Russia. The Executive Order mandates that suppliers use exclusively sources approved for these elements. This means that all government contracts are regulated as to what can be purchased from whom. This goes far beyond tariffs and directly regulates who can sell to government contractors. It is anything but a free market??? I find it interesting that those most against government regulation are for this and those most for government regulation are against this??? How do we or how should we determine when government regulation is to be considered not only good but necessary? When does the need for security override freedoms and liberties?????
