Maybe they look just like us, give or take a few odd features (like Spock's ears). Maybe it's clear that they evolved from another critter, like a fox instead of a monkey. Maybe they're three-story tall transforming robots. Either way, it's now undeniable that there is life on other worlds. How would you handle it? How do you think the people in your belief system would handle it? There are some secondary beliefs that aren’t taught anywhere, but rather they are assumed. I would probably have inadvertently killed them all in the processes leading to "first contact", which would now be "discovery of a dead planet." If they were fortunate enough to survive, I would be very excited and enthusiastic about it but would still put the Lord first. I think our scriptures allow for life (as we conceptualize it) on other worlds, even microbial life. I also think we may misperceive something as living that might not be, or something living as not. Well, as a point of doctrine, we believe that there are worlds without number out there with human life on it, going through similar trials and struggles that we experience here on Earth. I doubt we will ever make contact with any of those worlds, but, if we did, it wouldn’t challenge my belief system. It would surprise me, but it wouldn’t challenge it any. Now, if they evolved from another creature, that would take some prayer to understand what all of that would means and how that fits into the Gospel.
