This meme is making the rounds down here. FLOGROWN is a clothing company that has a big following around here.

Not bad for an AI generated image.   The tells:

Dude is somehow wearing a trooper's hat, a ball cap, and also has half of a "mystery brim" of a third hat coming out the left side of his ball cap.

Pretty funky font they're using on that license plate, if they can't even have two sixes look the same.

Dude is holding a piece of paper, a cell phone, and also a bit of used toilet paper coming out the bottom?  And he's using the edge of the truck bed wall for some reason?

Yes, it’s clearly a joke. Everyone knows that and is in on it as well.

Already happening.

Several people have taken to social media alleging that FEMA employees and other federal officials have threatened arrest and jail time to various individuals who have been using their private aircraft and boats to bring supplies into the area affected by Helen.

While it's hypothetically possible that there is some concern these employees have done a terrible job of outlining, conspiracy theories are already in circulation alleging that this is a deliberate act on the part of the government to somehow "punish" the region for one thing or another, with most of these focusing on the punishment being for voting the "wrong" way.

I think we need to bring back Occam's Razor. The conspiracy theories are getting out of hand. It's a good thing none of these nutjobs are federally-elec... oh. Oh no.

Elon Musk has actually been using Twitter / X to call out various FEMA officials and demand explanations for what is or isn't happening.

I'm not going to defend FEMA. Gator's right, the disdain and distrust of them is bipartisan. But I honestly don't see how intervention from Musk and his army of anti-woke crypto warriors is going to do anything other than bring partisan tension into a situation that should be apolitical. Of course, if Musk REALLY wants to make a significant impact in the affected region, I imagine he has the capital to do so.

lol, might be some hurt feelings here.

Biden announced shortly after that he had been speaking to DeSantis at the time.  DeSantis didn't even know Harris was trying to get a hold of him.

I believe the DeSantis team said something like:

Quote

"There is a procedure and chain of command to follow.  And the Vice President is not in that chain.  If she doesn't realize this, it shows that she's not ready to take on the role."

I'm sure he can make an impact.  But he isn't really as rich as his net worth would indicate.  Other billionaires have billions sitting in a bank account or other easily liquifiable assets.

Others invest in mutual funds or other stocks as minor shareholders, or they have additional holdings like real estate, etc.  And that is where their wealth is stored.

Musk only has stock in his companies that he owns.  He can't easily sell them without risking a takeover.  So, it's not so easily convertible.

He had to take out a loan by leveraging his Tesla stock in order to buy Twitter.  I would be really interested in finding out how much he has on hand that can easily become liquid.  It may be a few billion.  But the way he lives, how much he gives to charity, I wonder if he even has $1B in cash anywhere.  He certainly could.  But I haven't been able to find anything on that anywhere.

He even said that he got rid of all his assets (including his house*) except his company so that no one could attack him for his wealth.

*He's a homeless billionaire.  Who would do that?

True, but “we” (obviously I don’t speak for all Floridians) don’t care who helps us as long as it’s not FEMA and as long as they don’t advertise their helping from town square.

Of course in emergencies we’ll take whatever help we can get. But afterwards you can count on us having disdain for anyone who publicly praises themselves or their group for helping everyone.

Like all natural disasters/bad times it shows who really cares about you and who just gives lip service. Few of us expect handouts and for those not affected to upend their lives for us.

It’s heartwarming beyond words to have friends text you, DM you just to make sure how you are doing okay. Thanks to everyone here who has done that.  Means the world to me. ❤️

Musk has made claims about people attempting to set up Star Link systems (or whatever his satellite-based communications network is called) in the affected region.

There was some sort of dust up about the government wanting to keep Starlink out of the area even after Musk said he wanted to send them. But then they said that they already had them there even though Musk was not aware of any units active in that area???

No offense, but I believe claims made by Elon Musk as much as the average Republican believes claims made by MSNBC.

I like and admire many things about him, but I find his personal life a little disturbing. If he was poor he’d be on the Maury show.

Musk illustrates the principle "Just because you're a once in a generation genius transforming the world in wonderful ways, doesn't mean you're right about everything."

One of North Carolina's Republican congressmen has issued a statement clarifying some misconceptions about FEMA's involvement in relief efforts.

https://edwards.house.gov/media/press-releases/debunking-helene-response-myths

From your link:

Quote

FEMA officials have repeatedly affirmed that the agency has enough money for immediate response and recovery needs over the next few months.

Secretary Mayorkas’ statement indicating otherwise was an irresponsible attempt to politicize a tragedy for personal gain.

On the one hand -- Whew!  Thank heaven for that.

On the other hand -- What on earth was Mayorkas thinking!  What kind of bonehead says that?
