Descriptions:

In this episode, Dave explains that ALL of God the Father’s spirit children are technically spirit siblings. Latter-day Saints believe that Lucifer (who rebelled against God and became “Satan”) is one of those spirit children (who has since been cast out of God’s presence, of course), and therefore one of our spirit siblings.

Since Latter-day Saints also believe that Jesus Christ is a spirit son of God the Father (the Father’s “firstborn” in spirit and later in the flesh), technically you could say that Jesus and Lucifer are also spirit siblings. This is quite a controversial subject among non-Latter-day Saint Christians, so in this episode, Dave provides some additional context.

Notes:

-When Latter-day Saints are asked about this “Lucifer and Jesus are brothers” question, we’ll often compare them to Cain and Abel from the Bible. It’s a simple comparison and it makes a fair point, but is, in my opinion, slightly inadequate.

Cain and Abel were brothers, but vastly different in character. Their choices led them down two very different paths. Cain was the epitome of evil, while Abel was the epitome of good. Yes, technically they were brothers, but they were nothing alike. Similarly, Lucifer and Jesus are brothers, but they are nothing alike.

I did not include this comparison in this episode because focusing on the relative exclusivity of Cain and Abel’s sibling-ness doesn’t do justice to the fact that Jesus and Lucifer were two siblings among billions and billions of others. Christ is your elder brother, my brother, that guy’s brother, everyone’s brother. Christ, of course, held a special place in our spirit family as the firstborn spirit son of God and the Father’s “Chosen” from the beginning. Lucifer, on the other hand, while “in authority,” was just another spirit dude. We don’t know what “in authority” means, nor how many others were in authority alongside him. Anyway, to make the Cain/Abel comparison more true, they’d need several billion other siblings in their family. Instead, they’ve just got Seth (I don’t remember any other siblings).
