Descriptions:

In this episode, Dave talks about something that both Latter-day Saint critics and scholars largely agree on: Joseph Smith’s “gold plates” probably weren’t actually solid gold. Dave then talks about a metal alloy called tumbaga whose characteristics are strikingly similar to the descriptions of the plates we have available.

In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the LDS Church or Mormon Church), members believe that Joseph Smith (the first prophet and the organizer of the Church) translated the word of God (now called the Book of Mormon) from what they call ‘gold plates’ but as most members of the Church agree, aren’t actually pure gold.
