Descriptions:
The truth is, Mormons can be offensive. Many people have been offended by someone in the Mormon church. Justin, Kwaku, and Mimi talk about their experiences with being offended and their reasons for staying in the church despite negative experiences.
Mimi talks about a time when she felt very uncomfortable going to church. She felt different from the other girls her age and felt like she truly didn’t fit in. Finally, her mom told her, “We don’t go to church to for the people… we go to take part of the Sacrament and to learn and develop our testimonies.” Mimi says that despite having this mindset, being offended still hurts.
Justin talks about being physically bullied as a young boy. He was confused as to why people would act harmfully towards him if they were disciples of Jesus Christ and if they were supposed to treat everyone with love and kindness.
Kwaku talks about being called a very offensive name by a member of the LDS Church in high school when he wasn’t a Mormon yet. He was shocked at what she said.
All of the hosts agree that taking offense isn’t always wrong. But Jesus Christ, as Kwaku says, is the Savior for the offended and the offender. He knows all sides and will be your advocate. Whether the person who has offended you is a leader, a peer, or whatever else, you may choose to take offense. But be faithful in Jesus Christ. He loves you and will be with you through all times.
Have you been offended by someone at Church? Or maybe outside of the church but by someone who was a Mormon? How did you stay faithful? Let us know your stories in the comments below!
