Descriptions:

You’ll often hear Latter-day Saints talk about “The” resurrection—as if it’s this one singular event. But Latter-day Saints actually believe that the resurrection of the dead will occur in stages over quite a long period of time. And it’s the chronology of those stages that Dave talks about in this episode.

Notes:

-One question people may have is: What happens to the mortal people who die during the Millennium? When would their resurrection occur? The Encyclopedia of Mormonism teaches, “[The] first resurrection will continue in proper order through the Millennium. The righteous who live on earth and die during the Millennium will experience immediate resurrection. Their transformation will take place in the ‘twinkling of an eye’ (D&C 63:51). The first resurrection includes the celestial and terrestrial glories” (Source link: https://bit.ly/37Sj503 ). In other words, those who die during the Millennium will be instantly “changed” into a resurrected being, and take part in the First Resurrection. In this sense, people don’t even really die during the Millennium at all. Their bodies simply pass straight from mortality into resurrected immortality.

-There are exceptions to this general outline of the order of the resurrection. For example, Moroni lived after Christ, but is a resurrected being. President Joseph Fielding Smith taught,

“It is the opinion of some that the resurrection is going on all the time now, but this is purely speculation without warrant in the scriptures. It is true that the Lord has power to call forth any person or persons from the dead, as he may desire, especially if they have a mission to perform which would require their resurrection. For example, we have the cases of Peter, James, and Moroni. We are given to understand that the first resurrection yet future, which means the coming forth of the righteous, will take place at one particular time, which is when our Savior shall appear in the clouds of heaven, when he shall return to reign. For us to speculate whether or not the Prophet Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith, Brigham Young, and others have been called forth, without any revelation from the Lord, is merely supposition. When the Lord wants any of these men, he has the power to call them, but the first resurrection, with which we have any future concern, will commence when Christ comes” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 2:299–300).
