What in the world is a saving ordinance? It’s important to first understand what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints means by “ordinance.” Ordinances are sacred, formal acts that hold spiritual significance. These ordinances are performed under the authority of the priesthood (the power and authority that God gives to act in His name). Ordinances can include (but not always) making covenants with God.

Now that we know about ordinances, what is a “saving” ordinance? Okay, first of all, members of the church use the word “saving” a little different than many other Christian denominations. Saving doesn’t mean that if you aren’t involved in the ordinances, that you will go to hell. They are better explained as “exalting ordinances.”

The following are “saving ordinances”:

Baptism
Confirmation
Ordination of the Priesthood
Temple endowment
Marriage sealing
