Religion is a polarizing topic of discussion sometimes. So, when it comes to getting good information to better understand The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (sometimes colloquially referred to as “Mormonism”), who can you trust? Notes:
-On the subject of encountering critics, it is also worth noting that you’re going to find controversy and opposition in any religion where people are involved—even in God’s “true Church.” Exhibit ‘A’: Look at the Old Testament Israelites. Even though they were God’s “chosen” people (that’s a loaded term that we can chat about another time) Israelite society wasn’t exactly a squeaky clean utopia, so I don’t know why anyone would expect perfection today. The same is true of many of the other popular religions of our day. There’s no shortage of controversy. Just as there are anti-Latter-day Saints groups out there, there are anti-Evangelical groups, anti-Catholic groups, there are anti-everything groups. So if you leave your faith because of controversy x, y, or z, just be prepared for a new set of controversy wherever you go next.
It’s probably for this reason that despite the efforts of countless anti-Latter-day Saint ministries, many of those who leave our faith simply identify as agnostic. Granted, that’s just my hunch, and I don’t have data to back that up. My feeling is that anti-Latter-day Saint ministries are probably more effective at getting people to leave our faith than they are at getting them to join their faith, which must be their ultimate goal (I would hope).
-Non-Latter-day Saint anthropologist Manu Padro stated rather graphically (about the doubt-bombing technique), “They are trying to coerce you into a situation where they can bombard you with so many doubt-provoking questions that they can cause your resolve to collapse and your identity to fall apart. Inside of that vacuum, created by an act of psychological rape, they hope to impregnate you with their own belief system. If that sounds abusive, it’s because that’s what it is. It’s an extension of the cultural legacy of the inquisition. They can’t torture you, but they can humiliate you and pressure you with questions you don’t have an answer to yet. They try to hit you up with too many of these questions to answer, because if they don’t it wouldn’t work… It’s garbage but it’s a common strategy in the anti-Mormon ministry.” Source: https://bit.ly/2D98J0l
