In God We [Still] Trust: Atheists Lose Another Court Battle
In yet another court battle, Atheists have lost their case to remove “In God We Trust” from all of the United States’ currency. Religion News Serviceย (RNS) reported that the plaintiffsโa group of humanists and minor childrenโargued that carrying around nationalย moneyย withย a religious phrase printed on itย violates their constitutional right to freely practice religion asย they desire.
The 2nd U.S.ย Circuit Court of Appeals in New York declared that printing the motto on the United States’ currency does not violate the constitution. The three-judge panel says that the phraseย does not represent theย religious affiliation of the American government, but rather acts as aย โreference to the countryโs religious heritage.โ RNS reports that Rory Gray, a member of Alliance Defending Freedom, supports the court’s decision:
โAmericans need not be forced to abandon their religious heritage simply to appease someoneโs animosity toward anything that references God.โ
