The Crucifixion and the Cross: What Latter-day Saints Need to Remember

Latter-day Saints don’t traditionally use the cross as a symbol. We focus on the living Christ—His resurrection, His ongoing ministry. But sometimes, that cultural choice can quietly lead to a doctrinal mistake: downplaying the importance of Christ’s crucifixion.

The cross as a symbol is separate from the reality of what happened there. The scriptures, Joseph Smith, and modern prophets all emphasize the power of the crucifixion as part of the Atonement. It wasn’t just a method of death—it was where Christ bore the sins of the world.

Some believe Gethsemane was the core of the Atonement, but to separate it from the cross is to miss the full picture. The risen Savior invited His disciples to see His wounds. He invites us to do the same.

We may not use the cross, but we must never forget the crucified Christ.

Should Latter-day Saints avoid talking about the crucifixion? In this raw and eye-opening conversation, John Hilton III, author of Considering the Cross, helps us confront the discomfort, misunderstandings, and even spiritual numbness that keep us at a distance. Through real stories and scripture, he shows how understanding Christ’s death can change how we live—and how we love. #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #lds#prolds #latterdaysaint #mormon #byu #easter #christian
