What Does the Term “Priesthood” Really Mean?

What are we really talking about when we use the term “priesthood?” There is a lot of confusion regarding this.

Part of the confusion I think can come from how we use the term “priesthood.” When Latter-day Saints use the word “priesthood,” we’re often thinking of offices like teacher, deacon, priest with specific keys and offices. But the ecclesiastical offices and keys of the priesthood are distinct from priesthood. . The broader definition of priesthood is an order, or collection, or body of priests. You have brotherhoods, sisterhood, now priesthoods. People who are priests are part of the priesthood. . All disciples who go through the temple to receive their endowment—both men and women—are anointed to become priests and priestesses and are prepared to officiate in the ordinances of the Melchizedek and Aaronic Priesthoods. Therefore, the endowment endows men and women with priesthood. Elder Rasband has clarified that, . “Many members of the Church who accept, love, and appreciate the priesthood may find themselves “fuzzy” on the doctrine and principles. Perhaps that is because the term priesthood is used in at least two ways. First, priesthood is the term used to describe the total power and authority of God. Second, priesthood is also the term used to describe the power and authority that God gives to ordained priesthood holders on earth to act in all things necessary for the salvation of God’s children.” . #lds #prolds #ldswomen #mormonwomen #reliefsociety #ldstemples #mormontemples #priesthood #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints
