Descriptions:

Mauli Bonner, the director of the movie Greenflake comes on The Middle to talk about troubling and controversial history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The movie is about an enslaved pioneer named Greenflake who led the first team of pioneers and handcarts into the Salt Lake Valley. He was the first one! Brigham Young sent him to blaze the trail while he was sick in Winter Quarters.

Mauli talks about learning the darker part of the story however, as well as other African-American pioneers, some enslaved and some not, and the horrific conditions and anguish they endured, and the faith and perseverance that helped them prevail. Mauli says, “We will never have to have the kind of faith that they did.”
