-I am deeply sorry, for I should have been more attentive. I thought I kind of misunderstood, although it is most unrealistic for any of us to expect to understand Rev. until after it has happened. You may disagree, but about 85% of members reading Revelations forget that back then, John the Revelator had NO knowledge of what it would be like here today, and so in his visions he saw our way of life including weapons, transportation, clothing, laws, instant mass communication, etc. How could he without knowing what all of that was possibly put it in words others could understand? He of course had help from the Lord, but for the most part, writing about his visions came as what struck him the most useful to you and I. He knew that the church that was going to start a few years after his death would not allow its members to read and interpret the scriptures, so he didn’t write for them, even though they had copies of his writings. He wrote for those who would be most affected by the things he saw, but did not himself fully understand.
-Revelation 11:2-3 (Forty and Two Months=a thousand two hundred and threescore days) - Represents the number of months that the two witnesses have from the time they begin prophesying to the time Christ comes. These two shall keep the warriors from storming Jerusalem until they are killed. 42 months in 3.5 years. 1260 days is about 3.45 years.
-Rev: 9:5 Your five months is torment of a scorpion when he strikes a man. When one is stung by a scorpion, they beg for death, and this is characteristically mentioned as a punishment they will not die.
-Rev. 11: 9 (3.5 Days) See the pattern? Throughout all the scriptures, a lot of witnesses were bad guys at first, until they had a marvelous miracle, humbling experience. Then they went about serving the Lord, teaching of Him. These witnesses are probably paying off a debt, or at least by what we know of them, they have a lot of work cut out for them. It is not unrealistic to suppose that after doing the service to the Lord that they will be killed, and will lie in the street for the whole world to know for about 3.5 Days until the Lord’s Spirit enters them and lifts their bodies to their feet. Thus, 3.5 days or years, either way, is possibly countdown and preparation for their redemption, and lifting up to Heaven.
-Rev. 12:6 (a thousand two hundred and threescore days) Again we have the same time as for the last chapter, but this is actually length of time symbol- it means famine, as does the woman mentioned in the verse. See Amos 8:11-12 It is a famine of hearing the words of the Lord, she will be in the wilderness for the length of time that the witnesses in Jerusalem shall prophecy, and it is because she has fled there to a place prepared of the Lord.
-Rev. 13:5 (Forty and Two months) - Yes, this is mentioning a blaspheming beast that will be in power for the same length of time as mentioned above. The truth about this same amount of time is that all sorts of things are prophesied to come to pass during it. I will be a very busy time for all. This particular usage though is referring to the Anti-Christ. For later in the chapter 13, verse 18, it reads: “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.” This is where the number 666 comes from.
-The 10 days of tribulation to the blasphemers mentioned in Rev. 2:9-10 is significant in that the Lord has once told all, probably in D&C the most that he will not try us beyond that which we can withstand. 10 days are all the Lord has time to give trials to those whom he earlier in that chapter professed to hate. I believe the time frame has to do with certain judgments of men that happen throughout the last days, judgments that God makes.
-The most successful way of trying to understand what specific amounts of time symbolize is to know that time is only time to men, and therefore is basically all we spiritually need to understand about it. However, I assume you are not doing this just for fun and you are therefore using it in a lesson, or even an assignment. You could search for a whole year, nonstop and still not have all the symbols time has to offer in the scriptures, because we are only men, and lack the divinity of the Lord. I suggest that no matter what you want this knowledge for, you ask Him, for he will give to you knowledge when there is asking in faith. That very philosophy recorded in James is what restored this wonderful gospel.
-Sorry again, if I have made an error. You’ve probably already noticed that I am not into shorthand or shortcuts in writing, particularly because it seems so hasty, so meaningless. I am trying to write a novel, have been for about a month since I got a new job that allows about 5 hours of paid freed time (night watch for troubled teens at a reform residential school) and it has proved to be much fun, and is coming along rather nicely. So forgive me if I am long winded.
