I’m not saying that the Police and National Guard acted inappropriately on a whim, they were ordered by city officials to illegally seize private property and disarm citizens. The Courts determined that the seizures were illegal and that the property was to be returned, and also ordered a permanent injunction against the city to never again illegally seize firearms from law abiding citizens. Alabama also passed a bill last year to prevent state or local government from seizing lawfully owned guns during emergencies based on what happen in New Orleans. The OP asked a legitimate question and for the most part was given helpful replies from people. I do not think voicing concern or questioning the actions of overzealous government officials during disasters is unfounded. I should have mentioned this before but I applaud the fine actions of EMS, Rescue and volunteers from various agencies. It was a terrible time for many of us and unfortunately the courageous deeds of some are often overshadowed by the improper actions of others.

Yes, I've been called selfish and many, many other things. Selfish, because I stopped allowing family members to “borrow” away my stock because they were broke (they are always broke) and needed diapers or foods or other such things that they never resupplied. Selfish, because I wouldn’t loan a family member $2000 to file for Bankruptcy, even though I “have the money to help them out”. Selfish, because I don’t feel bad for people that make stupid decisions in their life and it ends up costing them; I only pay for my own mistakes, they have to pay for theirs. Selfish and “heartless”, because my only concerns are for the welfare of myself, my husband and our child and not for every bum on the street or people that breed indiscriminately and then expect us to pay their way. It used to bother me when I would hear things like that, but then I looked at our life and then at theirs and I realized why they said those things. Some people either can’t or won’t, do for themselves and they resent those of us that can and will, do for ourselves. Now I look at it as a positive when people make those types of comments, I figure I must be doing something right.

This did happen, and you're fooling yourself if you think it won't happen again.

While citizens Corn Flakes might have been safe from the .gov this time, many people lost their supplies to looters after forced removal of a means to defend themselves and their property. To the original poster: I would prepare anyway and keep quiet about it. I think your concerns are valid and you are not alone in them.
