I have a minor question concerning D&C 138, verse 27, that Christ only had a 'brief time' to minister to the spirits in prison. I was under the impression that time was only confined to this mortal sphere, that as Skousen says that we (as spirits) coming from the pre-existence are not used or comfortable with time. So wouldn't three days absence from here on earth be equivalent to an eternity on the other side? I am probably way of track with my thinking so set me straight.

OK Just-a-Guy, What does this mean? 21 Howbeit this a kind goeth not out but by prayer and by fasting. I must have lost the plot somewhere.

My goodness, this has gone deep. It's times like this that I am so thankful that I am not an academic, if being one means that I have to rely on other academics thoughts to guide me. I have a personal knowledge (not belief) of an afterlife, or at least a sphere that exists beyond our physical world. I also have felt the promptings of the spirit to enlarge my understanding on issues. I am far from having a perfect knowledge of all things but have enough evidence to base the rest on faith, what I don't know I will accept on good faith. The gospel is simple. Don't be afraid to have the humility to test it.

Do it Pam, I left school at 15 (48 years ago) and worked all my life. The 3rd oldest university in the UK is 18 miles away and I could go fully funded. I took a foundation year to learn how to study and write essay's etc and ended up winning an award, now I am waiting to start the degree. I can see it's not for everyone but if you enjoy learning, have a subject that is interesting and good tutors then it's 3 years of being entertained.

I have made 'contact' several times in the past, before we joined the church. All it did was to confirm to me that there is another dimension other than the physical world we can see. A short time later the elder's knocked on my door. Since then I have left it all alone, it was clear anyway that the spirit we had contact with was trying to misguide us. As I said my wife likes watching Ghost Hunters because of the characters, they all seem like nice guys (apart from Brian!), no, this is unwelcome, I don't need this.

Hi Pam, Sorry, it was a rushed visit, it rained, was cold, and we couldn't wait to get back to California! It was far too much like Wales! The Temple was interesting though, never seen a live session before. Can't say we enjoyed it, Lucifer resembled a mild mannered, soft spoken High Councilor we have back here! (who is in charge of casting!) My dream is to come back to the US and tour, but it wont happen, I am now a impoverished student back at University. Do you have adult learners in the States?

Hi Maya, the nearest I have been to a Nordic country is Ikea! I would love to see the fjords but our traveling always took us south. We used to go to Germany and France often, but now we can't get away so much because we have dogs, and less money!

skippy, are you sure you posted this in the right thread, I have no idea what you are on about, 'different terminology' etc. Anyway I can see this thread going on forever and I don't want any of you good people dwelling any longer on the negative, the answers have been superb and I have learned a lot, I know nothing can harm me as long as I stay obedient and have the spirit of the Holy Ghost with me. I now recognize the various origins of these entities, but where they come from doesn't really matter as I know the Lord is more powerful than all. God bless you all.

Thanks again, great answers. I think it's a good idea to set some spiritual music over there, I should explain, my wife and I and our two sons own this complex of buildings which was a woolen mill. American troops were station here during the war and some Italian POW's. The building in question is right opposite my home and is huge and empty. It all started when my daughter-in-law went into the building and came out screaming, like she was possessed. It lasted for some hours and we called the Bishop out. Eventually she calmed down, I have never seen anything like it. The nearest I have ever come to experiencing anything from the other side is when I feel prompted by the Holy Ghost, and one occasion when I had a bad dream and used the name of the Saviour. To be honest I felt a little like the preacher who advised Joseph Smith to prey for guidance regarding which church to join, and when told of the visitation said those things don't happen. Because I have never experienced anything bad I had my doubts. Now my daughter in law has been LDS all her life, she has never felt anything like this before, she said it was evil. I will play some good music over there, maybe leave it running all night, and then go in and say a prayer.

I jumped straight in with a question so would like to backtrack and introduce myself. I live in Wales with my family, was baptized some 30 years ago, all my family are active and doing OK. I am retired (early) but started university a year ago, I am busier now than when I worked. I also started playing in a bluegrass band and did some national festivals last year, the band has since split and I am now looking for something else. My wife and I visited Salt Lake 2 years ago, it was a great trip, we drove from LA through Vegas and enjoyed every minute of it. We especially liked California, you are so lucky to live in such a vast country with so many climate variations. Wales is also beautiful, but it rains a lot. The coast is fantastic, I would say even better than California. We have seen a lot of Europe, we have decided that our favorite places are Rome and Jerusalem. We are forever thankful to the two missionaries who knocked on our door back in '78, Elders Mitchell and Goiny. Bro Goiny has since left the church and I last saw him about 15 years ago. Elder Mitchell, if your out there, thank you.

I totally agree a-train re ghost stories, I never read them or watch so called paranormal TV shows (my wife does like watching Taps though), all of the sightings have come from others, family members and friends, all long time church members. I have never seen anything, one friend said he was 'jumped and attacked' the other day when he walked through the building, he is an elder and has a great knowledge of the scriptures. All I want is a peaceful home, filled with the spirit. By the way I like the quote re personal/public interests, for a long time I have felt that having an aspiration to be an politician should be an automatic exclusion default.
-
That seems to open another question, I was under the impression that 'visitations' and other paranormal activity comes from the third that followed Lucifer, which is why we are advised not to dabble with anything that does not come from the Lord. Prior to joining the church I had experience of paranormal activity, and after joining the church understood that it all came from the dark side, however the quotes above say that sometimes it is from people that had lived and passed on.

Thanks so much for such a full answer, can't understand all of what Joseph Smith said, but am very pleased that you didn't laugh at me. To those that have experienced the presence it is very real and very powerful. Without prompting they have separately come to the same area of the building, in fact the exact spot and identified it as where the spirit is strongest, and now refuse to enter the building. If only we had 'Taps' in this country! Only joking. I have felt the spirit of the Holy Ghost often in my life, and have been guided and felt his influence. To acknowledge the positive also means there is an opposition, which only gives weight to my testimony. Thanks again.

Thanks, of course another priesthood holder would be advisable but not available at present, so I am going alone. I guess I just want re-assurance that nothing can harm or affect me without me allowing that to happen. Isn't that so? What exactly do you mean by 'foul play'?

I am a High Priest, yes, I do have faith in the priesthood.
