Somone once posted this...I liked it:

If I don’t watch it, these discussion boards will “poison my spirit.” Turn me into a Pharisee. And I believe that’s the danger of all of us—we’ll all become Pharisees, if we’re not careful.

What’s a Pharisee?

The Pharisees were not wrong in doctrine; they were wrong in assumption. They assumed—if they possessed the word of a thing, they possessed the thing itself. Wrong. They assumed: right information equalled right relationships. Wrong. In fact, one of the strongest rebukes ever that our Master gave was to the Pharisees.

“…You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life [but you don’t] and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.” --Jn.5:39,40

That scares me.

The Pharisees loved the scriptures but hated God. How can that be? I see it all the time. Only Christians eat their young.

The Pharisees assumed that since they were scriptoriums, they were holy. Ouch. That hurts. And Jesus finally told them, “…you are of your father, the devil…” (Jn.8:44) They had that spirit of always wanting to be right. Always having to--one up you.

I find that very same tendency so prevalent on discussion boards. If I don’t watch myself, I will write a post and go away thinking, “…I got him on that one…” Quite candidly, that’s the spirit of the devil at work in me. That's the spirit of the Pharisees. And I just quoted what Jesus said about them. Who He said their father was.

One of the scariest chapters in all of scripture is, I think, Matthew chapter 2. Here we have a bunch of scripture scholars (scribes) having a “Bible Study” so they can find out where God is going to be born--so they can go kill him! We would never think that our wanting to be right doctrinally all the time, our having to have the last word every time--is actually taking the Word of God and killing Him. And one another.

The Pharisees didn’t understand one important distinction: you don’t get life out of the scriptures, you get light. Life comes only from Christ—whom they refused to come to. They had their scriptures instead. But you can shine a flash lite on a dead man in a casket all day long and he won’t see! He needs a resurrection, then he can see.

The Pharisees were blind and didn’t know it. I think we’re all like that. A little. That's sad. And dangerous. If we harbor that spirit.

I love the spirit of this man, Joseph. Our beloved prophet was so wise.

In a sermon preached in 1843, Joseph said:

“…If I esteem mankind to be in error, shall I bear down on them? No. I will lift them up, and in their own way too, if I cannot persuade them my way is better. I WILL NOT SEEK TO COMPEL ANY MAN TO BELIEVE AS I DO…for truth will cut its own way. Do you believe Jesus Christ and the gospel of salvation which he revealed? (I think all of us simply need to ask the same thing? And respond as Joseph responded.) So do I. CHRISTIANS SHOULD CEASE WRANGLING AND CONTENDING WITH EACH OTHER, and cultivate the principles of union and friendship. I AM JUST AS READY TO DIE DEFENDING THE RIGHTS OF A PRESBYTERIAN, A BAPTIST, OR A GOOD MAN OF ANY OTHER DENOMINATION.”

Some things need no comment.

"And the time that I kicked the ###### out of that minister for not believeing that I am a prophet of god, well, we were just playin' around." He's an even bigger hypocrite than you.
