Cathy Minty has been in the news both publication, radio, and TV news studio being interviewed. What makes her unique, is she is a single mother of five kids and took on a apprenticeship to become a plumber. She took on a special program for single mothers to get back into the work force.

As for church, she is often very busy with piano and other calls. Often can see her whizzing past me in the hallways doing something that may seem a little urgent :)

She was married and lived in the interior of BC. But as soon as her husband and family moved to the Vancouver region, her husband left her. But now, she will be able to help take care of her familly with the help of the income she will make. Her retired parents take care of the kids "those not in school" when she is at work.

Wow, good for her! I really admire women like that.

After my parents' divorce, my mom also had to work and raise us kids at the same time, and I really don't know how she did it, while retaining her sanity. Very strong. Very dedicated!

Even had a new crew coach her for 10 hours to look professional and represent the program and woman in trades.

What is odd however, one of her ex husbands mistresses congratulated her for doing such a good job and being a good rep for the program.

I think more woman should work in trades. It would make the men behave more.

The plumber who worked on my septic in my old house was a middle-aged woman with a husband and 3 kids! The husband works with a contract company who is constructing a highway. I was kinda surprised to open the door to a diminutive woman with blonde hair and blue eyes and very slender like a Barbie, even wearing really pretty make-up, carrying plumbing gear.

This janitor at my work is living with a girl who is going to a welding school. She is doing the underwater welding specialty where they do welding in scuba gear. Very interesting. He said, when she finishes, she's going to be making three times more than he is and he is worried that she might leave him for somebody better!

anatess, underwater welding is very dangerous. But yes, they do make good wages. Its good there is some balance in the trades. Will keep the men in check with some of there behaviors ;)

Saw Cathy at church today. I asked her "what was the spark that got you all this media attention" The news reporters came to itabc.ca and asked the head of itabc "which woman would be the poster child of itabc for international woman's day?" they said Cathy Minty and the fact, she has five kids ;). I can say, if it wasn't for her parents taking care of her kids while she worked, she would still be not working taking care of the kids on welfare.

At the same time, Work-At-Home jobs are growing by leaps and bounds. I work at home, I have several friends who do the same. I even have a friend where both spouses work at home and they just had a brand new baby. All of them do their jobs via internet. I even know of a college professor who works at home - he holds his classes online.

No, work-at-home doesn't mean you can take care of kids AND work at the same time. What it does allow is for the kids to be self-sufficient as far as schoolwork or activities are concerned and just have the work-at-home parent be there to make sure the kids don't light the house on fire or something.

I think work at home..in a day and age of rising fuel cost makes alot of sense. home office is where its at. I just wished more companies would employ video conferencing.

Not all collaborative meetings can be held via video conferencing. There's just some stuff that you need that personal contact especially when you're dealing with external clients. But, it does drastically reduce the number of times you have to drive to the office.
