  1. Technically you must be legally married "first" to be sealed. (NOW) In the US this occurs at the same time but as pointed out by mormonmusic you must be legally wed first, in these other countries that don't accept a sealing as legal before being sealed.

So as it stand right now

You can be married to someone you're not sealed to

But you cannot be sealed to someone you're not married to*

*death and divorce complicate this. What i mean is 2 people with no intent of being legally wed cannot get sealed, and i believe (perhaps someone can shed some light on this) while you can do a sealing for your deceased parents, even if they where divorced, you can't seal your deceased great aunt Edna to her deceased live in boyfriend , even if they were together for life because they were not legally married.

  2. I had an experience last night that frustrated me. My husband is very involved with scouting, but in a non-LDS troop. I am the YW president in my ward, and our program is relatively small. We have a fair handful of girls, but no active young men in our ward. Once a month we have combined activities with the youth from the ward with whom we share a building. Last night we had our annual planning activity with that ward. The youth and leaders came up with probably over 30 activity ideas, then we voted on them. Among them were paintball and Nerf war. Paintball got nixed because of finances, and Nerf war got nixed because it had been done recently anyway.

Before eliminating these two, however, I spoke with the YM presidency in the other ward, who were sitting next to and behind me. I explained to them that their boys couldn't actually participate in either of those two activities, if they were registered Boy Scouts. They looked at me quizzically and I explained to them that BSA policy doesn't allow scouts to point anything resembling a firearm at another person. Shooting ranges are fine, but something as innocuous as a water-gun fight is not. The YM president didn't really say anything at first, but just thought about it. His counselor gruffly said, "Well that's why we won't do it as Scouts, but for a Young Men activity instead." I pointed out that the policy extends to family play in the backyard, and it didn't matter what you called the activity. His response then was, "Well, we just won't tell the BSA. What they don't know won't hurt them." At this point, the YM president asked me how I knew of that policy, and I told him that my very-involved-in-Scouts husband had told me, leading up to the previous Nerf war activity.

Like I said, those two activities eventually were eliminated due to other reasons, but I was really irked by the cavalier attitude that they were above the rules.

I laugh because i agree with the cavalier attitudes. Absurd overreaching policy that i would ignore as well.

Reminds me when my daughter tries to get her brother in trouble for saying the "H-word".

I had to explain to her just because you can get in trouble at school for saying "I hate billy" doesn't mean your brother saying i hate broccoli at home will.

Besides, from list of prohibited activities

Parasailing, or any activity in which a person is carried aloft by a parachute, parasail, kite, or other device towed by a motorboat, including a tube, or by any other means, is unauthorized.

You wouldn't tell your son, sorry, you can't go tubing on our vacation. You're a boyscout. Would you?

Though i do see the point about them calling it a young mens activity, to get around the scouting rules being an issue.

I don't however think those rules apply when at home. Looks more like a we don't want get sued sort of thing to me.

  3. I think he may have learned his lesson. He has to work with the Republicans now that there's a power imbalance in the senate.

As for his previous actions as President, I sincerely believe him to be a moderate trapped in immoderate times. You have to remember that the bailouts(Which I think we can agree was the single series of events that would paint him as immoderate) were pushed by Republicans as well when they were in office, but they reversed their stance when they lost power.

I like Obama. He's sincere, direct and truly believes in what he's doing. I disagree with what he's doing sometimes, but I believe him when he talks about what he's doing. He has had a remarkable amount of transparency in his time in office compared to historical presidents. That transparency has paid off for him with people who pay attention.

:offtopic: Why is a Canadian so interested in USA politics and affairs? Nothing wrong with it, just wondering.

  4. Another problem i have encountered was in the "mission field" where wards cover larger areas it wasn't very practical.

Our young mens group was made up of ,2 guys from this town, another one from that town, one from 30 more miles down the road, one 2 cities to the north etc.

For mutual activities, like playing basketball or volleyball it was no big deal. When they turned mutual into boy scouts the ones interested in the program had been a part of established troops in their home towns, with local friends.

It was better, and more fun to be part of a local troop of friends you saw every day at school for the youth and more practical for the parents. Scouts killed our young mens program and IIRC after a few months of only 2 or 3 boys showing up they dropped it.

  5. Jack LaLanne dies at 96; brought fitness to masses - Yahoo! News

Revolutionized fitness and did more in his twilight years then most will do in their 20s

In 1936 in his native Oakland, LaLanne opened a health studio that included weight-training for women and athletes. Those were revolutionary notions at the time, because of the theory that weight training made an athlete slow and "muscle bound" and made a woman look masculine.

When he turned 43 in 1957, he performed more than 1,000 push-ups in 23 minutes on the "You Asked For It" television show. At 60, he swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco — handcuffed, shackled and towing a boat. Ten years later, he performed a similar feat in Long Beach harbor.

  6. Tattoos fade with time, and your skin loses its elasticity around my age, after menopause, at which time those tattoos fade into a big blobby ugly blur that you will be forced to cover out of embarrassment.

You know i never understood this "argument." Not to sound insensitive but if your body gets stretched out and sags to the point it makes the tattoo look bad, then the body part probably looks bad and most would want to hide it as well.

  7. I sheepishly have to admit to my suspicions being completely wrong, Michael.

OSHA offers a tattooing based Bloodborne Pathogens course one can complete in as little as 8 hours. 11 day courses are also available. It's commendable to take something like that and also plausible.

Actually wanting to immigrate to one of the most conservative areas in the US with a unessential non conservative skill , is what put it in my mind.

From my understanding (and i'm no expert) it is a quite difficult process, most "slots" going to families or or those who get sponsored through skilled job E.G. Doctors, engineers and can prove they can support themselves financially here.

Piercer/tattoo artist would be a long shot from what i understand.

Of course it could just be the "follies" of youth.

  8. It could have been misinterpreted by my teacher when I was in Young Men than.

I just thought that maybe consider spirit paradise isn't a free ticket to the Celestial Kingdom that you didn't have to be baptized into the church just to go there.

AFAIK you do have to be baptized, with proper authority to go there, that is why we have the temples.

  9. What MOE said.

It's a common misconception that church is a place for people to show off their righteousness. It's not, it's a place for us sinners (all of us) to learn and try to become better. Even if you don't want to/ not ready in this area that doesn't mean there are not other ways it could help.

I can't tell you how many cigarettes i've smoked in the church parking lot over my life. I could have not gone until quit, but then i would just feed that old tired stereotype people leave to sin .

If you want to go then go. You will not be the only person with sins, you will not be the only person not ready to repent. You could even consider yourself lucky that it's not visible.

  10. What I was informed of is that those who are in spirit prison cannot enter the Celestial Kingdom. So why should people like Mother Teresa be punished just because she did good elsewhere instead of in our religion?

I don't know about that. We do temple work I.E. Sealing, for people who would not "qualify" for Paradise. Yet as far as i know this is only valid for Celestial glory. So we would be wasting a lot of time, if being in spirit prison was an instant disqualification for celestial.

  11. What is not negative of not being able to inherit the celestial kingdom?

Maybe the terrestrial life is good enough for you, so I guess that is where you're gonna go.

Think what wing is saying is that Spirit prison is for those who didn't have the gospel, those awaiting ordinances. While your post concentrated on the sinners.

The Apostle Peter referred to the postmortal spirit world as a prison, which it is for some (see 1 Peter 3:18–20). In the spirit prison are the spirits of those who have not yet received the gospel of Jesus Christ. These spirits have agency and may be enticed by both good and evil. If they accept the gospel and the ordinances performed for them in the temples, they may leave the spirit prison and dwell in paradise.

So spirit prison would include both Ted Bundy, and Mother Teresa. MLK, and Joseph Stalin.

  12. You're a seventeen year old who majored in Blood-born Pathogens? That's impressive. I didn't realize sixth form(High school, for you Americans) had medical specializations available in Scotland.

And isn't the proper term 'Bloodborne Pathogens'?

Is this thread making you think of the 3 billy goats gruff as well?

  13. What I mean by eternal progression is exactly the same as you believe. Eternal progression applied to God as well, did it not? God does not progress when He is God but didn't he progress from being a man to becoming a God? Are there steps in between being a man and becoming a god?

All I'm trying to do is understand this verse. I might be misunderstanding but it sounds like you're being defensive. I hope that isn't the case though. There is no need to be.

The main point of the question was this. If God started as a man and eventually became God, how is He unchanging? Was He only unchanging after He reached Godhood?

Like i said before not everyone believes that but My father is my father. This is unchanging. He was a child himself, i have grown and become a father myself. But he being my father has not changed. Never will.

  14. The sermon Joseph gave is in the gospel principles manual. edited

The Prophet Joseph Smith taught: “When you climb up a ladder, you must begin at the bottom, and ascend step by step, until you arrive at the top; and so it is with the principles of the Gospel—you must begin with the first, and go on until you learn all the principles of exaltation. But it will be a great while after you have passed through the veil [died] before you will have learned them. It is not all to be comprehended in this world; it will be a great work to learn our salvation and exaltation even beyond the grave” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 348).

This is the way our Heavenly Father became God. Joseph Smith taught: “It is the first principle of the Gospel to know for a certainty the character of God. … He was once a man like us; … God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, the same as Jesus Christ himself did” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pp. 345–46).

    Some people emphasize

    When you climb up a ladder, you must begin at the bottom, and ascend step by step, until you arrive at the top; and so it is with the principles of the Gospel—... This is the way our Heavenly Father became God.... He was once a man like us;

As in God was a man like us, followed the rules of his God to become exalted and have create worlds without end, have spirit children like we hope to accomplish.

    others emphasize

the same as Jesus Christ himself did”

As in he was always God, but played the role of Christ at one time.

It's not really cut and dry, but i think the things both camps can agree on is that God was once a man, we don't know if he began that way or took it on but we know he was once a man.

I would also point out eternal doesn't mean forever as per D&C 19

5Wherefore, I revoke not the judgments which I shall pass, but woes shall go forth, weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth, yea, to those who are found on my cleft hand.

6Nevertheless, it is not written that there shall be no end to this torment, but it is written endless torment.

7Again, it is written eternal damnation; wherefore it is more express than other scriptures, that it might work upon the hearts of the children of men, altogether for my name’s glory.

8Wherefore, I will explain unto you this mystery, for it is meet unto you to know even as mine apostles.

9I speak unto you that are chosen in this thing, even as one, that you may enter into my rest.

10For, behold, the mystery of godliness, how great is it! For, behold, I am endless, and the punishment which is given from my hand is endless punishment, for Endless is my name.

    11aEternal punishment is God’s punishment.

    12Endless punishment is God’s punishment.

  15. Whether the scriptures were mass produced or not isn't the issue. Lehi knew of them just as Laban had them and I'm sure Laban's followers knew of the brass plates as well so it wouldn't be a surprise if others knew about the plates.

Sure it is. You asked what would traditionalist do today if they lived in bible times. Would they follow the prophet or have a "no need" attitude?

The "no need" attitude comes from a belief that Christ fulfilled all, which they get from their mass produced scriptures.

Let me give you an analogy. And a poor and oversimplified one at that.

I have a 95 olds cutlass. I never take it to a mechanic. I have a Haynes manual (bible) that breaks everything down, so i can fix it myself.

If it was December 1994 and my car was a brand new model i would take it in for every hickup. Because the manual was not written.

I don't avoid modern mechanics because i'm against mechanics and therefor would not listen to them in the past. I avoid them today because i don't think they are necessary today.(for my model of car).

  16. I think it would be interesting. Today we hear people say "There's no need for a living prophet. There's no such thing as a modern-day prophet."

The best thing the Bible talks about in regards to this is obviously the Pharisees who believed in dead prophets but not in living prophets or Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

How do you think traditionalists of today would be if they lived in the times of those such as Isaiah and Jeremiah since they were the modern-day living prophets of their time? Do you think they'd believe or do you think they'd still have the "no need" attitude?

I would think most would follow. Most who i have met who take issue with a modern day Prophets don't do so because they are against the idea(from an authority stand point), but because Christ came, because of the scriptures, because of the changing authority line/ time gap etc.

The "no need" attitude is based on having scripture.

So in biblical time, without a personal copy of the scriptures i think they would follow.

  17. I interpret that scripture in a completely different way. I think we have a big problem in English with the double negative (the footnote doesn't help much). However, let's not forget verse 21:

    Or this one:

In most scriptures I have read there seems to be a connection between eating meay and a need to survive. I think the figure of billions of animals being slaughtered every year in the US just for the "taste" goes beyond any "need", IMO.

Should have put a :P as it was meant to be light hearted. But the revelation was given because a bunch shaker teachings in the area prevented some converts from eating pork and many obstained from meat altogether.

On top this the billions of animals slaughtered, are breed for that purpose. There are not many heards of wild cows and chicken roaming around and they wouldn't be if we didn't eat them.

Also 16 million pounds of that beef comes from desert farms. Largest cow calf operation in the US with 44,000 head of cattle. Owned and operated by.....

    The church

  18. i think we all should become vegetarian. Back in the times of the bible they sacrificed animals so they could eat but today it is just slaughtering so we can have food that we don't need just because it tastes good.

    d&c 49

    18and whoso forbiddeth to abstain from meats, that man should not eat the same, is not ordained of god;

    Just saying
