It looks like rock to me and in the article they speculated that it may have been for some sort of posts as well. I would agree that it doesn't seem to represent ancient doodling either the shapes a measurements seem very precise.

yes I was thinking the compass and square and one other mark on the coorilated pictures was just as interesting, that is in coorilation with symbols being worn.

I stumbled across this article on Yahoo news today and found it pretty interesting. I'm sure that most LDS temple goers have a basic idea of what these carvings may be in regards too but I don't think its that simple.
