I wouldn't believe everything in the JD. If it were in any of the Standard Works though it would be a different story.
I should add that the problem I have with the quote is that Brigham seems to be saying that if you don't love your spouse now you will automatically love them in the after life because we'll be perfect. There seems to be a paradox and a contradiction there. It seems to be contrary to the doctrine that we'll be raised with all the passions, feelings, tendencies and knowledge we have when we left the world. The paradox I see is how can we not love them, and everyone else after we are perfected if the attribute of perfect love is not found in us at that point? And would our inability to either accept, or reject the sealing in the afterlife void our agency? Wasn't our agency a rather large sticking point for some in the pre mortal world? Or have I just been awake too long?

I think it has been taught by some that as we lay our bodies down they will so rise again in the resurrection with all the impediments and imperfections that they had here; and that if a wife does not love her husband in this state she cannot love him in the next. This is not so. Those who attain to the blessing of the first or celestial resurrection will be pure and holy, and perfect in body. Every man and woman that reaches to this unspeakable attainment will be as beautiful as the angels that surround the throne of God. Yes He knew. (Not sure if we knew or not, but it was pre-veil, so I don't see the harm in having it revealed to us)
2 Nephi 9:20:
"O how great the holiness of our God! For he knoweth all things, and there is not anything save he knows it."
There are no exceptions to that truth.
"He knoweth all things! Except who our parents would be, the choices we would make in life, whether or not we would make it back to Him, and what kind of car we would drive."
It doesn't work like that. He knows EVERYTHING.

It has to do with the fact that we have a body and Satan doesn't.
I'm not too sure about that. Alma 42:5:
"For behold, if Adam had put forth his hand immediately, and partaken of the tree of life, he would have lived forever, according to the word of God, having no space for repentance; yea, and also the word of God would have been void, and the great plan of salvation would have been frustrated."
He would have lived forever in his sins, not being able to repent. He would have been miserable forever, not being able to repent. He would have been immortal - still possessing a body, but under the power of the devil, miserable forever and angles to a devil forever.
If it was as simple as needing a body to overcome Satan the Lord God would not have placed cherubim and the flaming sword, that he should not partake of the fruit. Take the fruit - immortal - done.
We need to die. Without it there is no repentance, for there would be no need to do so. Without repentance there is no forgiveness. Without forgiveness you remain in your sins. To remain in your sins is misery.
It's all in Alma 42.

The Book of Mormon repeatedly warns of the dangers of becoming proud. Pride is a state of mind, not an outward act (like adultery). As such, when we talk of the big sins (murder, adultery, etc.) we are talking about the acts. Pride is a condition that can lead to these things. Lewis is right that pride is what drove the devil into rebellion against God.

And from 3rd Nephi 6:15-17
Now the cause of this iniquity of the people was this—Satan had great power, unto the stirring up of the people to do all manner of iniquity, and to the puffing them up with pride, tempting them to seek for power, and authority, and riches, and the vain things of the world.
16And thus Satan did lead away the hearts of the people to do all manner of iniquity; therefore they had enjoyed peace but a few years.
17And thus, in the commencement of the thirtieth year—the people having been delivered up for the space of a long time to be carried about by the temptations of the devil withersoever he desired to carry them, and to do whatsoever iniquity he desired they should—and thus in the commencement of this, the thirtieth year, they were in a state of awful wickedness.
I added the bold, but you can easily see that one of the root causes of all of their sins was pride. So destructive was this pride that Satan had such power over the people that he could get them to do whatsoever iniquity he desired.
No doubt at all that included sexual promiscuity.

I will be able to continue an eternal parent/child relationship with both of my natural parents on the other side of the veil even if they live in different mansions.

I'm with you, Vort. I don't understand this. It flies in the face of agency. It appears that I have to work for exaltation, but my kids get a free pass. Doesn't sound right to me.
I can easily admit that I simply don't understand it or that my mortal mind cannot grasp the concept.

If I do so, knowing full well the will of God and his commandments, and rebel doing as I please - "committing whoredoms and murder and all manner of wickedness", I will burn in hell forever.

There is no foot note or addendum in that passage of scripture that says, "Unless you have been sealed to your parents. Then you are good to go."
Laman and Lemuel had a righteous father to which I am sure they either were sealed or have been/will be at some point, but they were wicked and must pay the price.
Mercy cannot rob justice, neither can being sealed to parents.

Current Church policy is that if an individual has been promiscuous with one or several partners for an extended period of time outside of marriage they are ineligible for missionary service . Is this a recent change (last 10-15 years)?

Okay, once again I will reiterate that each & every time I have boughten my garments (here in San Diego, in Oahu, HI, Tempe, AZ & even in Salt Lake City, UT), the very first thing they asked me is to see my Recommend, since I always have my Recommend with me, it never goes beyond that first question. See, you, yourself even stated they they asked for your Recommend and since you did not have it, it went beyond that first question of asking you for it. That is the point that I have been making all along....yes, they do indeed ask for it. As far as, having to go beyond that question, well I've never had to go that route before. That's all that I have been stating all this time.

Well, I will have to disagree with that. Each and everytime that I have gone in to buy garments, they always ask for my Temple recommend. I just purchased another pair just last week and they asked for my Temple recommend at that time as well.
Well, I have to disagree with that.
I haven't held a temple recommend for over 6 years, yet I was able to purchase a whole bunch of new garments for my wife and myself recently. All without a recommend. At the temple. They asked for my recommend when I was checking out. I said I don't have one. They asked for my drivers license and looked up my info gave me the garments and sent me on my way.
Again - you do not need to have a current recommend in order to buy garments.

Of course he can influence our thoughts, but that's not the same as being able to read our minds and hearts. Heck, advertisers can influence our thoughts....Satan's had a few years more experience than they have, so he'd better be able to influence our thoughts. The key is how we react to that influence; whether we welcome it or reject it.
Yeah that was pretty much what the article Connie quoted was getting at.

Usually success is a good thing, not a crisis. I don't have a problem with being successful in what I try to accomplish.
Perhaps the OP was referring to the succession crisis in regards to the church leadership following the martyrdom of Joseph Smith.
Or is my sarcasm detector not working?

Oh yeah, and read what Connie posted. More than one prophet has testified to the fact that Satan can influence our minds and thoughts:
"The scriptures make clear that the adversary cannot know our thoughts. “Yea, I tell thee, that thou mayest know that there is none else save God that knowest thy thoughts and the intents of thy heart” (D&C 6:16). The scriptures also make clear, however, that Satan can influence our thoughts and actions by putting ideas into our minds and hearts."

Scriptural record would indicate that he can in fact place thoughts in our minds.
How else would he tempt us? Neon signs?
For he (Satan) hath put into their hearts to do this...

1) Read your scriptures daily.
2) Pray at least twice daily.
3) Attend church.
It's that simple.

If those things are difficult, pray for strength, you'll get it.
And if you do those things everything else will fall in to place naturally, I guarantee it. It might take a while, years even, but just keep it up. It worked for me.
1) Read scriptures daily (even one verse)
2) Pray at least twice daily (short and sweet still counts)
3) Attend church (vital, even fast and testimony meeting
