Like it has been said, it really does depend on the mission that he goes on. My friend was allowed to take his classical guitar with him to play. But what he can play and listen to (concerning the iPod) is usually general throughout the world. Usually what the rule on music is, is that you can listen to hymns, the mormon tabernacle choir, other church type songs and music that is over 100 years old. I assume that goes for playing as well. I hope that helps and I hope I'm not misguiding at all...
