Daddy’s Day

Her hair was in a pony tail, her dress came with a bow,

Today was Daddy’s day at school and she couldn’t wait to go.

Her mommy tried to tell her that she probably should stay home,

That the kids just might not know, why she went to school alone.

But she was not afraid because she knew just what to say,

What she would convey to them, on this special Daddy’s day.

But still her mother worried, for her to face the class alone,

For that was the primary reason, her mom asked to keep her home.

But the little girl, she went to school, eager to tell them all.

About a Dad she never sees, and the Dad who never calls.

There were Daddy’s all lined up, for every one to meet,

While children squirmed impatiently, anxious in their seats.

There were 7 suited business men, and some who worked with wood,

A doctor and some lawyers, professions that are good,

One by one, the teacher called, a student from her class,

Each one would introduce their Dad’s, as the seconds slowly passed.

At last the teacher called her name, the students turned to stare,

Each of them were searching, for a Dad who wasn’t there.

Where on earth is her Daddy at, a boy in back called out,

She probably doesn’t have one, another student dared to shout.

And from somewhere near the back, she heard one dare to say,

Looks like another dead beat Dad, to busy to waste his day.

The words did not offend her, as she smiled at her friends,

But she looked back at her teacher, who told her to begin.

Tightly she gripped his picture as slowly she began to speak,

And out of the mouth of a little girl, came words incredibly unique.

This is a picture of my Dad , a tear rolled down her cheek,

He lived a great example, so powerful but meek,

My father couldn’t be here, as he lives so far away,

I know he wants to be here, on my special Daddy’s day.

And though you cannot meet him, I wanted you all to know,

All about my Daddy, and how he loves me so.

He loved to tell me stories, and taught me to ride my bike,

He would surprise me with pink roses, and he taught me to fly a kite.

We used to share fudge Sundays, and ice cream in a cone,

And though you cannot see him, I’m not standing here alone.

My Daddy’s always with me, even though we are apart,

I know because he told me, he’s always in my heart.

With that the little hand reached up and laid upon her chest,

Feeling her own heart beat, beneath her favorite dress.

With that she raised the picture up, the picture of her Dad,

Who wore a New York fire fighting uniform, he was impressively clad.

The date, September 11th, over two long years ago,

The twin towers soared into the sky, both were smoking and a glow.

Even on his day off, his department called him in,

To rescue those within the towers, who’s future looked some grim.

He grabbed my head, gave me a kiss, and said he would return,

He held me tight, gave me a hug, his love he reaffirmed.

That was the last I saw my Dad, and felt his warm embrace,

To feel his touch, to feel his love, and his kiss upon my face.

Rumor has it he saved 8 souls, before his time to die,

As a proud declaration unto the world, his love he amplified.

From somewhere in the crowd of Dads, her mother stood in tears,

Proudly watching her only daughter who was wise beyond her years.

So she stood up, to show her love, of a man not in her life,

Doing what was best for her, doing what was right.

And when she dropped the picture down, staring straight into the crowd,

She finished with a voice so soft, but her message clear and loud.

I love my daddy very much, for he is my shinning star,

I know if he could he’d be here, but heaven is just to far.

But sometimes when I close my eyes, it’s like he never went away,

And then she slowly closed her eyes, and saw him there that day.

And to her mother’s amazement, she witnessed with surprise,

A room that was filled with people, who started to close their eyes.

Who knows what they saw before them, who knows what they felt inside,

Perhaps for merely a second, they saw him at her side.

I know you’re here besides me, to the silence she called out.

And what happened next made believers, of the ones who were filled with doubt.

Not one in the room could explain it, for each of their eyes had been closed,

But there, placed on her desk top, was a beautiful pink rose.

And a child was blessed for a moment, by the love of her shinning bright star,

And given the gift of believing, that heaven is never to far.

Wow! That was powerful and beautiful and has brought me to tears.

It's Father's Day here in the UK on 15th June and I've been asked to speak about my father, I would have loved to have read your poem that day, but I'm afraid I would cry again...

Thank you for sharing your words..
