Because he was trying to get the Saints to think and ponder about the gospel. Even today, we can hardly get the members to read their scriptures, much less to actually advance their spirituality by seeking diligently into the mysteries of godliness (D&C 84), which is part and parcel of the Melchizedek Priesthood.John the Revelator "saw an angel standing in the sun" (Rev. 19:17).
