Student suspended for long hair

We could insist until we're blue in the face (erm...we have) but many of my students' parents aren't up to the job. We don't have facilities to assist with greater hygeine issues, but we do have toothbrushes and paste, combs and barrettes.

And, by the way, we serve a mostly-in-poverty population but do quite well academically. A fight over hair length in a public school is ridiculous.

It entirely depends on the location. In some locations you'll get a massive backlash. In the primary school I attended as a student, long hair would not have been allowed either - and this was enforced as well, with the exception of religious beliefs. This wasn't too long ago, I left primary school in 1997 at the age of 11.

My guess would be there hasn't been too much of a blacklash in the location that school is in, otherwise they would never have tried to enforce it - the school know their own pupils and their parents.

To be honest, I still don't see the issue. Cut the kids hair, let him finish school then he can do what he wants, bearing in mind not all employers will be happy with long hair either. I'd rather my child learnt a lesson in conformance than defiance. He'd be a lot happier that way. But that's just me.
