JohnnyRudick Posted March 26, 2010 Report Share Posted March 26, 2010 This was an unnecessary slam. Slavery, while a bad thing, was common in his day. You judge them from modern eyes. Meanwhile, many of his day would be ashamed at how we live today.As it is, Jefferson treated his slaves very well, and sought to reduce/eliminate slavery in the USA. The original draft of the Declaration of Independence, which he wrote, included several lines on how England had introduced slavery to the Americas. Later, he pushed to have slavery illegal in the Northwest Territories.Slavery was one way for people of all colors to get to the New World.Many in places like Africa thought slavery an even better option then living in what they knew, trading it for what they knew not.
