Winnie G Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 We have gone on to page five on the Passion thread so I thought it needed a new start. I went tonight. The Passion will change you and I know it has me. I will never take the atonement for granted. It brought it "in your face" like you had not seen it in a long time. I wept openly till I sobbed and yet I found it hard to turn away knowing he did not turn away from me. It helped I had Kleenex in my face. Lots of Kleenex. My son held my hand and looked at me with such understanding when he witnessed Mary, more who she was then the mother of Jesus. She was his Mom, who ran to his aid when he fell as a small boy in play. My son had few words to say on the drive home but he said he had no idea how brutal it really was. That’s when the light bulb went off! It had to be! That is the one thing that the movie makes you realize. It had to be. He took upon the sins of the whole world those that lived before him and even now. In Gibson’s movie it went passed the garden to the crucifixion. I have to say I thought it would be worse, in a perverse kind of way. I am a Kleenex kind of women, but I would say to those who understand the atonement Go. For those who are squeamish you can make it though by turning your head. I was worried for the older people in the theater, but they seem to take it better then I did. Of course I could not see if they had their eyes closed. My son said there was an old man in the bathroom sobbing, a stranger asked if he was ok and then held him. My son said it was one of those “Wow” kind of moments. My son has accepted a Sunday dinner invitation, that’s a big deal for us. I did say to my husband “I thought more people would be crying”? Both my husband and my son smiled and said “they were you were just to involved to notice. Nice way of saying “you were crying to loud to hear them”. The other thing that came out of this was to my surprise how much Latin I understand. The words to describe Mel Gibson’s film is brilliant but its not like he did not have a grate story to tell. I can see why people would be converted or saved but this film, but you would have to have a basic understanding of the gospels. Someone from deepest jungle would think we were nuts to watch such a film and would most likely go back to the jungle to get away from us. R stands for realistic nothing more. Quote
Guest Starsky Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 Wow...you make me want to see it! I have been wondering if I really wanted to or not. Thanks Winnie! Quote

Guest Starsky Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 It would be fun. Actually I will probably wait unti it is out on video because I hate sitting in theaters. I like to be comfortable....go to the john without missing anything...stop and rewind to see a scene over again...stuff like that. LOL Sometimes when the movies are really agressive, I like to stop them right when they get too much for me...and take a break...let my heart get back to a regular rhythm ...LOL Quote

Winnie G Posted February 28, 2004 Author Report Posted February 28, 2004 It did not seem that long odd huh, some said they felt it like it went on forever, I did feel drawn to the screen, I so wanted to make them stop, but I feel that way at church videos. I take my relationship with my elder brother seriously. I really would have jumped in I think if I lived in those days, but that’s me I never stand on the sidelines, I but in. I would be dead but I but in never the less. Marry was so brilliant, you felt her motherhood so strong. WOW. If you go take Kleenex it’s a must. Quote
Winnie G Posted February 28, 2004 Author Report Posted February 28, 2004 Oh I forgot! There is a web site called thelife.com, it gives commentary on some of the things you cant figure out in the film. {Symbolism} Satin shows up with this ugly baby in his arms when Christ is being wiped, I could not quite get that so I found it on the site the theater was posting, The child was the anti christ. that made since. I think it is a born again site but I have not been there long enough to say for sure. Quote

I didn't find justification for the AMOUNT of abuse inflicted on Jesus in the actual text of the NT. Don't get me wrong--I have no doubt that He was abused and no doubt that crucifiction was brutal. However, I don't find in the text of the NT where it says that he was whipped with sticks, cats-o-nine tails etc in the way depicted in the film. To that extent I think the film was reaching.2)As to the film being anti-semitic---accept for the overreaching in what I just said, the film doesn't say much more than what the NT implies in the first place ie. That the Jewish Sanhedren didn't like the challenge to their authority that Jesus posed.PD--As far as I am concerned there cannot be ENOUGH vilification of the Nazi Germans for what they did to the Jews in WWII and anyone who says ANYTHING that even remotely sounds like they are sympathizing with the Nazi's or criticizes the condemnation of those Germans who were directly or indirectly involved can go straight to Hades, as far as I am concerned. I'm sure your posting was not meant to sound like it was excusing the Nazi's and that you have a clear realization of the enormity of the attrocities of the WWII Nazi's.This last statement does not excuse the many, many other "man's inhumanity to man", but the Nazi regime was particularly insidious because it posed an IDEOLOGICAL basis for its actions. There have been many massacres in history, but seldom in recent history have they been based on such a STARK display of a CLEARLY erroneous set of assumptions and IDEALS ie Some examples are that one group of people can be INHERENTLY inferior to another in a way that justifies depriving them of basic human rights or that physical traits have some inherent meaning as to intelligence, character or human worth. The holocaust was also particularly stunning because it happened under the noses of people who would otherwise mostly consider themselves Christians. It was a vivid example of the worst in human nature and the worst in even scientific thinking---there is no scientific justification for placing one group of people above another on any basis. Even skin color is simply a variation in the AMOUNT (not type) of human skin pigment. We ALL have melanin, and it is the SAME pigment in ALL human races--blue eyes doesn't make you superior--inspite of the Nazi ideology. Quote
