Can't seem to find LDS friends in my area . . . Am I doing something wrong?

I lived in Utah for a number of years and was able to find fast friends there. Friends that not only shared my beliefs but also shared my likes and dislikes as far as hobbies went. However, circumstances changed and I had to move. I then had much difficulty making LDS friends in the area I'm living in now. I eventually met my wife at a church tristake conference. But even after we married, she and I have had an equally difficult time making LDS friends in this area. Are she and I doing something wrong?

There are many places where it is difficult to make friends. We live in the suburbs and people tend to stay closed in all the time. People don't start up conversations with people they don't know. When we go down south to visit the in-laws people are so friendly, we feel at home instantly.

The only thing I can suggest is to get involved in activities in the community.
